    DVD/CD player stopped working
    « on: September 02, 2009, 06:00:02 PM »
    • My DVD/CD RW burner stopped working on my month-old PC.
    • It worked for a month and just stopped working...no SW or HW changes
    • It does have power to it. It ejects and spins the disk.
    • Inserting a disk does not start a window. My computer does not see the drive when a disk is inserted.
    • Device Manager reports "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
    • What I've tried:
    • rebooting
    • purchased new DVD/CD drive and installed it - it doesn't work either
    • swapped out cable between motherboard and drive
    • tried different socket on motherboard to plug drive data cable into
    • My PC: Dell inspiron 518, 6 GB RAM, Vista SP 1

    Please help. Thanks

      Warranty.

      I wish...it's a refurb from Ebay. It had a 14-day warantee.

Went to MS KB and ran the Fixit program.  It modified the registry I think. Rebooted and now it works.
