    Mouse and Keyboard not working
    « on: September 06, 2009, 10:06:38 AM »
Last night computer was working fine. I turned it on later on and neither my usb wireless keyboard or mouse was working. Batteries are new and the usb ports work. I tried a restart that did not work. So i used my folks laptop looked up a few similar problems. I tried a wired USB mouse and Keyboard and nothing worked. The last resort in the answers was a good old Format. I did that and for added measure i reset the Bios and just tried to boot and reinstall my OS but still my keyboard will not work. How do i fix this ??

    PLEASE HELP !!!

    any ideas appreciated

You kinda jumped the gun by formatting.  Anyway, are you saying, after resetting the BIOS, the wired keybord is still not functioning?

I hope you have a PS2 keyboard to try.  But try this first.

Did you reset the BIOS by removing the battery and shorting the CMOS pins?  Usually pins 1,2,3.  1-2 with a jumper is normal and 2-3 shorted is reset.  Some Motherboard require removal of the battery and the "hard reset" with the jumper.  Otherwise, just removing the battery will require waiting hours or days.

Make sure you first remove the AC line cord from the computer.

It definitely did a BIOS reset this time.  Pressing F1 on wired USB keyboard does nothing?
If no, please provide complete make & model number of computer and how old it is (maybe still under warranty).

Assuming the wired USB keyboard is good, I'm out of ideas.  I hate to say it, but it appears that the motherboard is dead.  I just wonder what killed it?  Time to do a Failure Analysis.

Power surge?  Any bad storms last night?  Inspect mobo closely, looks for something abnormal.  If you're lucky, you can spot the issue, even thought it's not all that important.

Are you up for building a computer?  In all likelyhood, all the other hardware is good.  For less than $100, you can get a replacement motherboard (not Acer).  Mobo manufacturer is printed on mobo (maybe Acer, maybe not).

Find the System Serial Number for the Acer and enter it here:
          http://secure3.tx.acer.com/FindSystem/FindSystem.aspx?title=Information%20About%20Your%20System

Hopefully, it will have a lot of useful information.

          Here's the specs:

Acer motherboard is nothing special.  An equivalent can be found for about $50US.

Look for LGA 775 motherboard which supports Intel Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad (yours is one or the other) and whatever memory the Acer has (DDR2-xxx).  Acer has integrated video and audio.  If you're not gaming, integrated video is acceptable.

Hopefully, you can still use the Acer Windows XP or Vista and then add the new mobo drivers.

Here's some Intel LGA 775 motherboards, my preference is for Asus, Biostar or Gigabyte.

I'd still be interested to learn what failed and why.
You also might consider a new power supply, 250W is not very robust and may be barely adequate.

Is it possible that the Asus mobo is OK, but the PSU has partially died (maybe lost one of the voltages)?  It's worth testing first, just to be sure.
