Open windows not displayed on taskbar

Hi,
The program windows open on my computer are not displayed on my taskbar. Can you tell me why this happens?

what system are you using........?do you mean the start menu more info..

Windows XP 2002

It is not the start menu.
The open window's titles don't get displayed on hte taskbar. None of the open applications that i have open are displayed as taskbar buttons.

This problem occured after i restarted my machine encourtering 'Not Rasponding' by the Lotus Notes

Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Have you been keeping up with your Windows Updates?

system is scanned for virus and spyware.
But not sure when the last windows update was done

Can you try running one now by going to http://www.microsoft.com ?

Was not able to run it right now.

Not able to do a windows update. Somehow my proxy authentication fails.
It is a pc at my work place.

while running windows update.
What does this stand for?

you can use updates for your work pc.....either ask msoft for thre sp2 disk.....or download it>> and burn it to disk http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/Windows-XP-SP2-RTM-Download-7910.html

Thanks for the suggestions.
I just restored my computer to its previous state and got back the window title display .
Don't know why the prob creeped up, but i am happy to get rid of Alt+Tab+Tab....
