AVG and Avast anti virus

Yesterday I downloaded the free versions of the above (not together of course) only to find that my computer virtually seized up.

First AVG then removed that and then Avast both of them seemed to slow it down to such an extent that it was unusable.

Anyone have any idea why please?

I don't currently have an anti-virus package so need to try to find one that works well, soon!!
