Monitor showing "No Sync" or "Signal Out of Range"
    « on: October 15, 2009, 01:38:12 PM »
I have an HP Pavilion desktop computer that is about 4 yrs. old and am running XP with SP3. I recently upgraded the drivers for my Diamond Radeon X1050 video card. I have a flat panel screen (I think it's an Acer - inherited it from my mother) - model no. is L17NCDT if that helps.

While working in a particular application like Word or Excel, or playing a game, all of a sudden the monitor goes blank and shows either "No Sync" or "Signal Out of Range." Since I can't see anything when this happens, I have to manually turn the computer off and then back on.

Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do to fix this? It gets really irritating since I work from home and may have several windows open at once, then I have to start all over again.

    Thanks!

I start by rolling back the driver if I were you.

Thought about that, but not sure how.

Just found the "Roll Back Driver" button. I'll give that a try.

Go to Device Manager and double-click on the display adapter - video card entry. Driver Tab - Roll Back

Rolled back the driver. While playing a game, the screen went blank and came back with a bunch of columns filled with pixels. So now it's even worse than before. Any other suggestions?

Video card, itself may be overheating, or going bad.

Thanks for tip on overheating. That rings a bell as I hear a fan kick in and run loudly sometimes, especially when playing games. I looked at the topic about temperature and found this URL:

I'll run this on my desktop tomorrow and see what happens. If the video card is indeed overheating, any suggestions?

He can remove the video driver in safe mode.
Reboot and install the driver again. Should reset the video to default.

Open the case (while computer off) and give it a good cleaning with a can of compressed air.
