Sound coming through speakers even when headphones plugged in

Hi,

I have a case (I work in IT support) where a user is getting sound still coming out of the machine speakers even when she plugs in her headphones. I checked the Sound and Audio settings in control panel, she seems to have only one device for all sound, audio etc (Audiotek), which appears to be working ok. It just doesn't cut out when she puts in the headphones. I checked she wasn't putting them into the wrong port, but there's only one headphone socket. I also changed the Desktop Headphones section from No Speakers to Desktop Stereo speakers, but nothing changed. Any ideas why this might be happening?

It's a typical office set up, Windows XP Pro installed on a desktop.

There is a mechanical switch on the headphone jack that is designed to turn off the speakers when headphones are plugged in.  It sounds like that switch has gone bad and needs to be replaced.

I would suggest just trade with somebody that likes it that way!

Hmm, there a few users like this in the company having the same issue, looks like they've bought duff hardware...!
