Fire Fox / IE and thoughts on IE 8

    Long story short ;

Downloaded FF  on my old laptop as reccommended from here about 3 years ago, roughly. As I remember I was under the impression that although FF and IE can run together it was better to just run one and you cannot get rid of IE 100%.

Been using FF ever since and loved it. Made my ole laptop run much faster. Oct 2009, had to buy a new Laptop and I was wondering if all the above still holds true? The reason I ask is I posted on another thread about FF and someone said use em both? Kinda dumb founded me. lol (Snide remarks to yoruself)

What do you think of IE 8 which I have not upgraded to yet. Until I decide to install FF or not.

    Thanks in advance,
    MP.

I actually have been using Google Chrome quite a bit, and I really like it. It is very quick, and some of the little extra features have come in quite handy at times.

Before that it was mostly Firefox for the last few years.  I also kept IE upgraded, as Windows Update and a few other pages (such as my employer's time card software) only display correctly on it.

I have to say though, after a little while with my new machine with Windows 7 and IE 8, the new browser really seems to run quite smoothly.  I'm sure someone will reply about potential security issues, but I haven't had any trouble yet.

Also, I have had no trouble having all three browsers installed at the same time, and every once in a while, may have all three open at the same time.

All of that to say, if you're looking for a quick, not-too-many-frills browser, try out Google Chrome.

IE8 has been improved, but Firefox is still my go to browser. Extensions and add ons make it far more continent and powerful, and the security is still far better than IE.
Don't forget to give thanks if I was able to help ya! Please?

Why wouldn't you have both (or more) on your system? You're not going to uninstall IE anyway, so add Firefox (and Safari, Opera, Chrome, or whatever else you like), compare them, and use the one(s) you like best.

I've had as many as 9 browsers installed at one time.....
IE cannot and should not be removed Period.

On the system I'm using this moment I have IE8 (my primary browser), Firefox, Opera and Safari. I only recently decided to try Safari and am VERY pleasantly surprised at how nice it is.

... the security is still far better than IE.
Can somebody cite some proof or reasoning to support this?

It's not that the security is better than IE, it's simply that IE still has the lion's share of users among all browsers so it's the one hackers target the most. You may be assured that both Mozilla and Microsoft are taking all precautions possible to make their browsers as secure as possible and they respond fairly quickly to new major threats / attacks.

I used to check Secunia browsers vulnerabilities to compare different browsers, but I'm too busy right now.
However, to me, the main security issue with IE is the fact, that, if any secuity hole is found, you have to wait until "Updates Tuesday" (once a month) to find possible fix (if).
        Rarely M$ issues out-of-order patches.
With Firefox, for instance, patches are issued almost immediately.

          Thanks everyone.

Like I said in the beginning maybe I remember it wrong but I have been under the impression it wasn't a good thing to run both IE and FF together. I'm no elephant. lol

Absolutely no reason at all. Use all the browsers you like ;)

Its a case of different strokes for different folks, or at least different times, each browser has its advantages and disadvantages and if you are really interested in the way one compares and relates to another the wiki page on the subject is incredibly detailed - wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_web_browsers. I swap between chrome and IE8 on my laptops.

Yes do get FF it's still the best and safest browser despite what other people may say.
