Chkdsk stall at start up on D drive but not on the C drive
    « on: October 27, 2009, 09:57:41 PM »
When the laptop start appear the message that for consistency chkdsk will be run on the FAT32 D drive. Chkdsk start but than it block on 0%.
In order to use the laptop I have to re-start and skip the checking.
Chkdsk works fine on the FAT32 C drive.
I have deleted all files on the D drive but problem still there. Tried to format the D drive but it doesn't allow me.
Also is normal that an HD with 26GB has only 21GB free space available (what's in the 5GB space).

    Thanks a lot.

XP? If so, boot to the Recovery Console and try running chkdsk d: /r. If that fails you can try the manufacturer's utility (from their web site), but there's almost certainly a problem with the HD

You probably deleted the hidden recovery files on D: for the laptop...
To be able to use all the space you would have to wipe both partitions and re-create a single one and then re-install XP and all your programs; drivers etc...

I forgot to tell that all software, drivers etc... are on the C drive. on the D drive I just use it as storage for files.

Try just hitting Enter at the password prompt...

To get to the recovery console, boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option (press "R"). Once in the recovery console, run chkdsk d: /r

Thanks, but unfortunately I do not have a cd as when bought it was already downloaded.
Do you know where I can download a safe boot disk?

You can download a recovery console .iso here: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212

Burn the image to cd with a program that handles .iso files, then boot to the disc and follow the instructions above.
