You probably deleted the hidden recovery files on D: for the laptop...To be able to use all the space you would have to wipe both partitions and re-create a single one and then re-install XP and all your programs; drivers etc...
XP? If so, boot to the Recovery Console and try running chkdsk d: /r. If that fails you can try the manufacturer's utility (from their web site), but there's almost certainly a problem with the HD
Try just hitting Enter at the password prompt...
To get to the recovery console, boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option (press "R"). Once in the recovery console, run chkdsk d: /r
