NTDETECT failed, tried reinstalling XP - didn't work
    « on: November 10, 2009, 02:18:21 PM »
    Hi.
My computer is a HP Pavilion dv1000. I don't really know many of the other details on it.  It had been working just fine.  My daughter was trying to get into delish.com, it wouldn't load, she got upset and shut the lid pretty hard.  Then this problem occurred the next time I tried to turn it on.  Also, the XP disc I used had never been opened before.  The only program that I've added to the computer recently is MSN Works & Money.
I got the message NTDETECT failed. So I tried to repair the system using the XP disc. That didn't take. So I tried just reinstalling the whole thing and it got to about 11% or so and everything after that said it couldn't be installed. It told me to press [Enter] to try again (which didn't work), [Esc] to skip, or F3 to quit. I tried skipping, despite the message that it might not end up loading correctly, but nothing else would install.
I have 3 partitions, #1 doesn't have enough room. I tried installing it on the 2nd partition which, from what I can tell, is where xp is currently loaded.  It had the above problem.  And the 3rd one is empty but wouldn't let me install on it either.
I'm not even sure what question to ask. Simply "help?" Thanks for any help you can give me.

I would like to welcome you to ComputerHope, it's unfortunate about the circumstances however.

If the laptop was closed really hard that might have damaged some hardware.  Other than taking it in for warranty work I really have no suggestion.  Just don't admit the 'Hard' closing of the laptop.

    Evil is an exact science.

      Hi.
My computer is a HP Pavilion dv1000.

      Also, .

I got the message NTDETECT failed.

      1.  Warranty.  Is it still under warranty?

      2.  Just Thinking.  I'm guessing the hard drive and the optical CD/DVD drive are the only components that have mechanical moving parts that could cause damage if physically abused.  The display screen seems to be working in text mode.  Rest of the components might dislodge from their connections.

      3.  Hard Drive.  I'd focus on the hard drive.  We know the system recognizes the drive because the "NTDetect" error message indicates it tried to boot a Windows NT class of operating system.  It had to load "NTLDR" from system drive and start executing it to produce "NTDetect" error message.  I think you should run disk diagnostic software to check the disk surface for damaged/bad sectors.

      4.  Recovery Resources.  Tell us about the XP disc that had never been opened.  Basically we need to know what kind of XP disc it is.  Can you tell us exactly what is printed on the XP disc and/or the packaging it came in?

Thanks for your swift replies.  Sorry I didn't get back until today, because of this issue I only have internet at work.
        1) It's not still under warranty.
        2) & 3) I'll look into these.
        4) The disc said "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition service pack 2.  358213-001"
