Suddenly unable to connect to the internet.
    « on: November 23, 2009, 09:21:57 PM »
I have a Compaq Presario C300 that has windows xp and I am currently not able to connect to the internet. I have been researching the Error it has given me which is HTTP: Error 12007. I have tried typing things into the cmd and resetting my laptop with no luck. I work at 2 hospitals and I cannot connect to the internet on either one. Please help, I have been able to connect to the internet until Friday and now I cannot connect.

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
    Power them back on.
    Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    ipconfig /registerdns
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
    cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

    At Command Prompt, type in:
    netsh int ip reset reset.log
    Hit Enter.
    Type in:
    netsh winsock reset catalog
    Hit Enter.

    Restart computer.

    If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
    Restart computer, and check again.

    If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
    http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

    Reinstall BITS
    Reinstall Windows Firewall
    Repair Permissions
    Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Restart computer.

Thank you for responding!! I am actually at one of the hospitals now so unfortunately I cannot directly connect to the modem. I was doing the other ones where I go to start, run, and type in cmd. It was doing great until I got to the ipconfig /release one and it said "this operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation. So I continued on down the list and when to start, run, typed in cmd and then typed in netsh int ip reset reset.log and it said " WARNING: could not obtain host info from machine. Some commands may not be available. The network location cannot be reached. And I'd also like to mention when I go into my control panel and go to my wireless network connection properties and click on the advanced tab it says " Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. The Windows management Instrumentation (WMI) information might be corrupted. To correct this, use system restore to restore Windows to an earlier time (called a restore point). System restore is located in the system tools folder in accessories.

It looks to me, like some system files corruption.
      I suggest repair install: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.html

Is there a way to restore my system without the Windows CD?

Yes, if your computer has recovery partition, or recovery CDs.
You must back up your data first, though, because all will be lost.

I don't think, anyone would be able to answer your question.
          Sometimes, it just happens.
