PC shuts off unexpectedly after 5-30 minutes of fullscreen
    « on: November 26, 2009, 09:56:51 AM »
I have a problem which I thought I'd fixed. When I'm playing StarCraft BW or watching a video fullscreen, my pc sometimes just shuts off after a couple of minutes. No error, no warning, no lag. It just shuts off. There's no problem in turning it back on, neither have I seen any memory loss.

I checked my temps just after turning it back on, they were 25/77°C and 36/96°C, IIRC. Not anything out of the ordinary, I think?

    Specs:

    Packard Bell
    IMEDIA D7000 NL
Pentium Dual Core CPU E5200 @ 2.50 GHz
    4,00 GB
    Windows Vista (64 bit OS)

I went looking on the internet already, tried troubleshooting at the Packard Bell website, the first hit was the right one: had about the same title as this post.
It suggested that I'd update my BIOS to version R01-A3, which I did. But apparently that wasn't sufficient.

I'm running really low on ideas here. Have you got any idea what might be the problem?

Check the temps, while playing the game.
    BTW, I don't understand what is: 25/77°C
    Do you mean 25C/77F ?
What are those temps for? CPU? Video card?

My guess is that it's 25°C out of a maximum of 77°C. I think the CPU was 25 and something else 33, but I don't know exactly.

My point is, if the CPU temps were 77 when the pc shut down, it probably would have been more that 25, which is slightly more than room temperature. If the CPU were overheated, wouldn't the fans (which were are a steady 1500 rpm, IIRC) make a heck of a lot of noise? There was no humming at all.

I don't think it's really a overheating problem, as it just shut down while I was watching YouTube. That's my problem. 3 months old PC's shouldn't collapse under the 'enormous' pressure of watching a YouTube video (this wasn't even full screen).

If it's 3 months old computer, DO NOT monkey around. Take advantage of the warranty. You even don't know, what kind of problem, you could expect in the future.

What do you mean exactly with monkeying around? I'm not going to open it up. I'm asking you for help because I don't know what to do. If you have no obvious causes, I'll just ask the product support, but I just wanted to check if I wasn't missing anything standard.

I think, you didn't read my reply carefully.
If your 3 MONTHS old computer is having problem, I strongly advice you to take advantage of the warranty.
My point is, that 3 months old computer shouldn't have ANY problems.
If it does, it may bring you more problems in the future, so it's in your best interest to check it NOW.

I know 3 months old pc's aren't supposed to have problems, that's why I am asking you now what my problem could be. I'm certainly not waiting on anything.
Again, what do you mean by 'checking it'?

I mean, the computer should be thoroughly checked by the manufacturer, so you won't get into any troubles, when the warranty expires.

I've sent an email to manufacturer's supportmail, so I hope he knows what the problem is.

My father did, they didn't know what could be causing it except overheating etc.

I'll just wait for the email to be replied.

If they didn't know, they should have taken it in.
Your warranty is still valid, isn't it?

If you want to pursue some other ways, that's your choice.

                I suggest trying www.speedfan.com

Download and install SpeedFan and monitor the temperature of your GPU.  If it gets up over 200F then there's your problem.  If your computer doesn't have a stand-alone GPU (meaning video's integrated with the mother board) you might have a RAM issue because the video accelerator on just about any onboard GPU can't handle gaming; low resolution settings or not.

I agree with Broni.  Explore RMA options first.

I'm running CoreTemp now, it standard says that my CPU is 34-37°C, it just shut down probably at 45°C, which is no where near 90°C (about 200F). So I can hardly imagine that that is the problem. On the other hand, when my pc shut down yesterday, it wouldn't restart the first time, only the fan was roaring. After a second restart it worked 'fine'.

I don't think the videocard or my pc's capabilities are causing it, as the pc is new and the games/videos work fine on my 10 year old pc.

Gremlin could be right as well.

Anyway, we're going to bring it to the shop next week.
