    Video Problem Again
    « on: June 22, 2005, 11:54:43 PM »
I had posted about this before, but I cannot find it using search. Again, this is my computer.

Every once in awhile, my monitor will go crazy. Lines and dots appear everywhere and the screen shut off and on and then they are gone. Then eventually it will happen again. Any ideas?

    Stats:
    AMD Athlon XP 3200+
    MSI Neo MB
    1 GB RAM
    nVidia GeForce 6800 GT @ 256 MB
    Samsung SyncMaster 191T

If you need any more info, let me know.
    WinXP

Your issue may be heat related. Install better cooling solution or increase the efficiency of the one currently installed.

Reformatted the computer. Windows XP. Installed startup drivers for card. Issue still occuring. VERY ANNOYING!!! Maybe problem does not lie with the video card, but with the motherboard/processor. Temperature problems perhaps. Problem only occurs after starting a 3D accelerated game. From there, after exiting the game, the issue migrates to the desktop and does not go away. Even after shutting the computer down, the computer magically a few seconds later starts up again by itself, even when I haven't pushed the power button.

If this is a temperature issue, can someone please recommend me a good cooling system. My room does get pretty hot in the summer since my room faces west and gets most of the heat from noon to 8pm. Air condition is no help as it does not come out strong enough from the vents. My blinds are old and don't close right anymore. I have removed the side panel of my tower to provide better air flow out of the case. The fan that was attached to it went, so having the side on was useless. TIA.

I suggest having your heat sink checked before telling you to buy new hardware... it can be checked at any computer store...

Bad idea... Check for dust that might be clogging your fans, etc.

Check all the video (and sound) settings in the game, over the years I've had a couple of games that 'changed' things/settings for my video.
I'd exit a game and the screen background would be a different shade, reboot would bring it back to normal.

          Try all the archived drivers.

You can monitor motherboard temperatures with this:
          MBProbe

You can monitor hard drive temperatures with this:
          HDD Thermometer

So you suggest I put the side panel back on even though the fan that is there does not work?

Also, what is your opinion on the canned air? I know that when applied directly onto certain surfaces, it turns to a liquid for a short while. Just wondering before I go out and buy some tomorrow.

Well, now, we wouldn't live in our great capitalistic society if everything were free, now would we... Or do you prefer a hammer and sickle, huh?

If a fan is not operating for a piece of hardware such as the CPU or videocard, it might be a good idea to have it fixed...

(You would want it to be fixed, trust me... A lot of people have overheating problems)
