    Right-click Context Menu
    « on: December 30, 2009, 05:36:23 AM »
I recently upgraded my Photoshop from CS2 to CS4.

Previously, my jpegs are associated with PS and will open in PS when I double left-click them. OTOH, if I right-click on them and choose Preview, they'll open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

However, since I upgrade to PS CS4, the jpegs will open in PS when I choose Preview in the right-click context menu.

How do I set it back to open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?

    Thanks.

Find a .jpeg in Windows Explorer...right clik it and select Open With...choose the app you want from the dropdown list...check "always use this app"

That will associate the file type with that application, but I just want to associate the Preview with a different application.

      Previously:

      Double left-click (Right-click->Open) -> Open in Photoshop
Right-click->Preview -> Open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer

      Now both open in Photoshop.

It worked that way for many years until I upgrade PS CS2 to CS4 last week.....

I remember there is a way to edit the properties of the entries in the context menu but I forgot how.

Type the following in the Run box and click ok (may have to reboot afterwards)
        regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

cruisin702, it prompts "DllRegisterServer in shimgvw.dll succeeded" but nothing else happened.

Windows Picture and Fax isn't now your preview program?

Perhaps more of a workaround than a solution you can so Tools>Folder Options>File Types ,
          scroll down to JPEG ,
          Click on Advanced,
          Click New,
Under Action type "MyPreview" or anything you want
Under application used to perform type "rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\shimgvw.dll,ImageView_Fullscreen %1"

This will give you a new right click option "Mypreview" which will open the jpeg with Windows Picture Preview, you will have to repeat for other file extensions

cruisin702, after I run the command, Preview still open the jpeg in PS.

As for the workaround, it'll be too troublesome if I'm going to do the same thing on every graphic file format.

I just couldn't remember how I can access the properties of the context menu where I can add/remove/edit each entry in the menu.

Have you tried to do a system restore to before you upgraded PS?

I thought by reading your OP you was only worried about jpegs. The extension JPEG also takes care of JPE and JPG extensions. How many extensions are you using? I think the only alternative is editing the registry and I believe even if you go that route you will still have to edit using each format.

              No I didn't.
I always avoid doing a system restore if the problem is not too troublesome.

Basically I deal with JPEG most of the time.
I guess I'll have to live with it until one day I dream of the way to edit the context menu...

                  Just a little update here.

I've reinstalled my Windows XP due to other problems. By default, jpegs and other graphical formats are open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer whether with Preview being the default action (top) in the context menu. As I associate the files with Photoshop, the default action becomes Open and it opens in Photoshop, while Preview will still open in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
