I caught the Internet Security 2010 virus.

I used a malwarebytes full scan to delete it.

Upon restart, I can't get into windows. safe mode does not even work and 'last known working configuration' does not work.

CHECK FOR VIRUSES ON YOUR COMPUTER. REMOVE ANY NEWLY INSTALLED HARD DRIVES OR HARD DRIVE CONTROLLERS. CHECK YOUR HARD DRIVE TO MAKES SURE IT IS PROPERLY CONFIGURED AND TERMINATED. RUN CHKDISK /F TO CHECK FOR HARDDRIVE CORRUPTION, AND THEN RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked. "

    Right now I'm in linux.

I would do a clean install of windows but I need the files on the windows partition.

I tried to rebuild the Windows boot.ini. using the "How to rebuild the Windows boot.ini." tutorial, but it did not work. Instead I've created 4 "Microsoft Windows Professional" items and the Ubuntu one is the only one that works.

      Repair Install of XP...

I suggest reading it thru to get familiar paying special attention to the Warnings and printing out a copy for reference...

Done properly all your apps and data will be intact...
Done improperly your data and apps will be gone but you will have a clean install of XP...

thanks, but that method did not work. It cleared the boot list though!

Do you have any more suggestions?

You finished that in 1/2 hour ? ?

        Interesting.

I have nothing further to suggest...

It was shorter than 1 / 2 hour.

          I:
          - boot with xp cd
          - Pressed enter "to setup Windows XP"
          - I pressed F8 to agree to the terms
          - I pressed R under the windows partition (the only one)
          - Setup showed the progress bar
          - It rebooted and I didn't touch a thing
          - It went to the boot list, went to the windows xp loading screen, then went to the blue screen of death (and now I'm obviously back at square 1)

            Here is what I get:

Booting Windows Normally: *** Stop: 0x0000007E

Safe Mode: Page Fault in non paged area - *** Stop: 0x00000050

              I tried:

              chkdsk /r

(check disk repair) and it said it found and repaired multiple errors, but when I tried to go back into windows it could not.

I also tried repairing windows again, no luck.

              Any other suggestions?

is there a way I can back up windows files from linux? and then store them on another medium, format the hard drive, and replace my important files?

Someone else on another forum suggested I use WineHQ in Ubuntu, partition a program called VistaPE.exe and then obtain the files, and format the hard drive.

You're version seems simpler so I will try that first.

                    Try This...

No luck, since I used the wubi install of Ubuntu I cannot see the Windows Partition.

Although I could try doing a real Ubuntu 9.10 live cd... but I have no cd's only a 1GB usb stick.

                      Another Option...

I'm on a single Thinkpad laptop with no other computers.
