New Hardware won't install (USB 305)
« on: February 02, 2010, 09:57:06 PM »
I keep getting a message for new hardware (USB 305) but I can't figure out which hardware device this is reffering to. How do I tell which device my pc needs the installation CD for?

Try each USB device 1 by 1 til you find the one that is not working...
You could also try re-installing your MBoard chipset drivers...

Also, open device manager. Any yellow marks?

Ok, it is the 'ATT Laptop Connect' wireless PC card (USB) that I use on my laptop (in specs), which I'm trying to install the software on my emachines desktop (in specs). But there is an error during the install process. =
When the setup wizard gets to the point when it installs the drivers, there is an error message as follows:
Title = microsoft visual C++ debug library
Contents = Debug assertion failed. Program E:\windows\system32\MsiExec.exe
file f:\sp\vctools\vc7libs\ship\atlmfc\src\mfc\filetxt.cpp
line 68
For informationon how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the C++ documentation on asserts.

This dialog box gives the options of abort, retry , ignore. Press retry to debug the application.

If I select retry it shows another dialog box that reads;
MsiExec.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Also, open device manager. Any yellow marks?

Yes, there were 4 entries under "other devices" named "USB 305" that had yellow marks. I selected "uninstall driver" for all 4 then uninstalled the AT&T software. When trying to reinstall the AT&T software, I got the error message described above.

What next?
Thanks for the help.

Run the Windows Installer Fix...

Re-boot.
Try installing the software 1st...with the card not installed.

I tried running the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility  - restarted - then un-installed / re-installed the software with the card inserted in the USB socket. (The software is within the card so I can't install the software without the card plugged in).
I still get the same error message as before. No difference.
At this point I have the 'AT&T InstallSheild Wizard' = "Status: Installing Drivers...Please wait" and also the dialog box for the 'Microsoft Visual C++ Debug library' with options of "Abort, Retry, Ignore"
What next boss?  :)

You may simply have a dead card...did AT&T provide you this card ? ?
If so i'd request a new one.

All the software and drivers installed fine on my laptop (in specs) which I'm using to post this.
