My girlfriend has the same issues:
It seems to be something wrong with the schools webserver-more specific: the SSL protocol negotiation process (the means by which they encrypt the information between you and your computer). I have seen the same issues with Vista using IE 8 and Chrome as well as my own Linux box (gentoo) using Google's Chrome. Since chrome and safari share much of the same code base, im sure safari is also effected.
As a way around it, firefox 3.6 opened the site fine in linux.
Also, although i don't recommend it, you can remove the SSL extension and access the site: negotiation
http://webmail.nicholls.edu/gw/ I would not really recommend this for long, either try Mozilla Firefox or notify NSU technical staff of the issues with the webserver's SSL being misconfigured (both that it won't work properly, and for that case the fact that you can access the server without SSL-it should not allow this anyway! the site should redirect you from http to https since this would be a very easy setup for a phish/man-in-the-middle attack anyways).
Hope this helps!
