Looking for free registry scan and repair program
    « on: February 09, 2010, 05:40:18 PM »
My wife was unable to open wmv. files. When I go under Folder options and file types, wmv isn't even listed (seems strange). Somewhere I was told to run a reccomended Registry scan and repair program (the computer is slow also, geting more memory tomm.) anyways the program is Uniblue Registry Booster 2010. It found 328 errors, and would fix 15 for free and the rest if I bought it. Is it worth buying? Are there free ones out there and does this seem like alot of errors or is this common?

As you browse the forums you will find that Registry Editors, Registry Repairers, Registry this that and the next thing are very very seldom, if ever, recommended by those with experience in problem solving.  Remember that it is in interests of anyone selling Registry repair/scan software to tell you how good it is and how bad the state of your registry is.  It is unlikely that you will find any noticeable or measurable improvement in performance having paid for and used any Registry Cleaner, Optimizer etc...

The only Registry cleaner type software in my armory is the one included with CCleaner (free from http://www.ccleaner.com/) but which I have never used.

My advice is to steer clear of Registry editors/repairers etc...

Wildman, assuming you are running WinXP since you posted in this forum, do you have Windows Media Player in your programs?  It will play .wmv files.  If you don't have WMP, which media player do you have?

And I agree 100% with the other members to steer clear of registry programs.

    1) Stay away from ANY registry cleaners
    2) Is the file association broken? What happens when you try to open a .wmv file?
