Title: IE Problems
Post by: squall_01 on August 19, 2008, 04:36:43 AM
I have a dell dimension 2350.  I have the most recent updates for the most part.  I have IE7 Installed but its not opening when clicked or let me look at pages saved an so on.  I tried repairing it an nothing worked.  I dont wish to do a restore since I have work stuff on this machine.

What about System Restore?

Thats what I'm saing, I dont wish to do that.  Dont recall when it appeared or had happened.  Also, I did a scan useing my defense an it didnt find anything that would cause this sort of thing to happen.

Note: System Restore is perfectly Safe.

Did you try reinstalling IE?

System Restore (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore) doesn't touch your personal files, so your work stuff should be just fine.  And if it doesn't help, you can simply undo it.

For reinstalling IE7, you should follow the steps here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917964

And if you're concerned about something happening to your work files, you could always back them up first.

Go ahead and give it a try whenever you get a chance.  I'm just curious to see if it gives you any problems.

Well, I don't really know.  That's what I'm hoping to find out by testing another browser.  Firefox should work, but I want to make sure.

Unfortuneatly, it didnt work.  I tried opening a page after installing it an it wouldnt open.  I tried even pointing it to the IE an couldnt find the program file.  This is running xp, will try the other recommened action if nothing else today.

So, Firefox isn't working either, then?  I know you said you scanned for viruses, but could you go ahead and post a HijackThis log?

Also...Download ComboFix (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe) and save it to your desktop.  Run the program and read its disclaimer (it's fairly short) and make sure you really pay attention to what it says.  Follow the prompts and when finished, it will produce a log at C:\ComboFix.txt.  Go ahead and post that here.  Note: Don't click on the window while it's running; this may cause stalls.

You need to update your Java and I don't see any anti-virus or firewall, but other than that, nothing really catches my eye.  But let's try this just for the heck of it...

Download CWShredder here (http://cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe) to its own folder.

Update CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again, continuously tap F8.  A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run CWShredder.  Click I Agree, then Fix, and then Next.  Let it fix everything it asks about.  Reboot your computer back into Normal Mode.

Let me know how this goes.
