Title: computer will no longer read CDs
Post by: illiana on December 03, 2010, 04:37:01 PM
My windows 98 standard edition will no longer read CDs. I was wondering if there's anything that can be done, or if its completely dead. Our family has had it for 12 years, and it isn't the end of the world if it won't read CDs anymore, but there are some games on there that my much younger brothers like that aren't compatible with any of our other computers.

Also, it isn't hooked up to the internet and won't be any time soon, so any solutions involving that are out of the question.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to clean the lens? If you haven't used it for quite long time it will collect some dust on its pickup lens preventing it to work properly.
