trekkie28001...Ram is a pain in the neck....lol
Do you have the exact specs on the ram you took out...
it isn't enough just buy a stick that will fit in the slot....
You need to have the same clock speed ie...... pc66 , pc 100 , pc133 . What type of ram does your pc require ?
It must be a almost perfect match.
# of pins is simple
is it registered or unregistered.
is it buffered or unbuffered
what parity do you need.
If you can find the specs for the motherboard in your machine it will spell out exactly what type will work and how much you may install.
Some ram must be installed in matched pairs.
Fromwhat you say .....I almost think you have 2 ram slots and you have the 32 mg stick in one and the 128 in the second one.....your machine sees and accepts the 32 mg stick and boots up .....but doesnt see the second 128mg stick ........ If your ram type is SIMM ......72 pin I think they must be in matched pairs.

What specific machine model?

I have a Compaq Presario 1245 laptop, and I used a 256mb module and it only gives me 128mb, because that's the maximum size module for that particular model.
