Title: USB Home network, How?
Post by: kiko on October 20, 2012, 03:30:11 PM
Dear People , I just cant do it although the experts say you can ,,,,,

Join two computers together to share files and hopefully the internet using a USB networking cable .

I tried and tried with the software and windows and everything , I did manage to mess up my internet and spend ages getting it back due to changed settings .....
What am I talking about ..?

Well.....
I got two computers .....
Computer No 1
Dell
USB 2.0
WIN XP
Connected to internet with DSL broadband using Ethernet type cable

 Computer No 2
Compaq
USB 1.0
WIN XP
No interenet connection , but does run the same way if I changed the cable over ,

I want to join the together , ( Mailny so my kids use the older one for some games and leave me alone )
I have a USB neworking cable the one with the small chip in the middle and various software .
I also have a USB extention cable to make it reach a bit better
The computers both recognise the USB cable and the software ......
But I just cannot get them to see each other ....

I just cant no matter what I do ... so I gave up .... then I remembered this site and thought ...maybe someone could tell me , in small words , what I am not doing ......

Do you want Computer #2 to get on the Internet?
If yes, you need 1 router for both computers & a network card for #2.  Router is about $20-50, card about $10.
Using a USB crossover cable to #1 & enabling sharing is far too much trouble.

Most home routers are both wired & wireless.
http://www.newegg.com/Wireless-Routers/SubCategory/ID-145

LAN cards can be wired or wireless.  Wireless can also be USB if you don't have a spare slot or want to easily move it from machine to machine.

If your internet connection is DSL, the modem already has wired & wireless connections.  If cable modem, you will need the router.

Ok ... I'm gonna do this .....
So the modem is on Computer no. ! Dell that has the internet modem

ftp://ftp.dlink.co.uk/dsl_routers_modems/dsl-320b/dsl-320b_manual.pdf

I thought this D-link was the router ??? see how bad I am ....

Which is wired , cable type ...
but the other computer is in the same room anyway , so it will be wired as well ...

And i find a networking card for computer no. 2 like this ?even though it already has an ethernet connection socket on the back ?
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/3Com-3c905B-TX-10-100-PCI-Network-card-/300796428683?pt=UK_Computing_NetworkCards_RL&hash=item4608dd418b#ht_500wt_716

but I dont see how to join them all together ... I will look for an idiots guide to putting it all together and get back on here to check my solution .........but thanks for trying to help me ,,, i wonder if I could get a new brain on E bAy ??? :P

The 320b is a modem only, so you will need a router.
http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/connect/modems-and-gateways/dsl-320b-adsl-2-ethernet-modem

Are you sure Comp #2 is an ethernet port & not a telephone dial-up modem port?  You said #2 was old.

Yes it is an ethernet port because i remember using it again when computer no 1 was in for a repair .... anyway that may become superfluous because i have been searching and looking at all the bewildering equipment out there now , and i think its possibly time to enter the 21st century and go wireless ....
I see there are little 'things ' you can plug into USB ports to make computers wireless , so  Maybe i could get a wireless router and put the modem into that and it may be easier ,
Or I also see wireless/modem/routers  kind of all in one ,, for a range of prices and some are not too expensive at all ..
I Just gotta make sure everything is compatible so i suppose if they were all the same make it might help ,,...and if it isnt too hard to set up .... any wise words for me on that one .... I realise I have now done a complete U turn from my first post  here ,.....
So I'm still looking around and gathering information ,..........

If you are still around ,Computer_Commando,, what would i be looking for in a modem/router and the dongles that go with them , a bundle would be handy ...
I am looking at things that say 802.11g... this is right .....?

Do you rent your modem from the ISP or do you own it?  You will likely need something compatible with your ISP's network.  Almost all recent DSL modems contain modem, wired & wireless router.  All recent routers are 802.11b,g,n; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11.

No need to go wireless since you already have ethernet, but it will be there if you need it for a laptop, etc. or if the wires will be in the way.  I would get any new equipment working wired before going wireless.

Windows Vista & higher have 802.11 support built-in.  Windows XP has support too, but the software that comes with the dongle might work better.  Windows 2000 & earlier has no built-in support.

My Modem came from the ISP , although they said you can use your own but they do not give help or advice on it then ...so its up to me what I use ....

I am in Ireland by the way and my ISP is Digiweb ...
the modem is pretty basic just telephone line in and ethernet out , no wireless there.
I think I will try for wireless as the cables run from the fromthe front  of the house to the back , down the main corridor .....

Anyway YOu just gave me a great idea , I have written to my ISP and told them that I want to go wireless and see what they have and what they can do , and if it seems good then OK and if not I could still get my own stuff knowing the compatibility..

Why didnt I think of that before ? ...you are a  genius ... thanks , i just needed a push to get my head working .......

Any router will be compatible with your modem.  Don't know what's available in the UK.
Check out Amazon:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/

With your Modem having the Ethernet out, means that a simple router will work just fine for this setup. Amazon is a good place to buy just about anything.

Using ethernet is usually as simple as having two CAT-5 cable (Commonly just called ethernet cable), and plugging in each desktop to your router. This is assuming that both computers have successfully been connected to the modem for internet in the past, and already have LAN connection set up in windows.

Setting up wireless on the old desktops can sometimes be trouble, depending on what brand dongle you get. I am not an expert on the USB dongles, but from my experience, sometimes XP does not like them. Make sure that when you buy a USB dongle, to look at the retailers description and make sure it's compatible with XP

Hello this seems to have got complicated  :)

The dlink is a modem router so to get more than 1 computer to connect you need a network switch a 5 port switch is less than $20.00.

As your children's computer only has usb 1.0, a usb wireless adapter probable won't work you would be better getting a wireless pci card. Thats if you go the wireless way.

Such good advice from everyone ......and it kinda works ...
I took a while to get the right stuff and not make a mistake ...

Anyway I have a Tenda wireless router plugged into my  Original modem ...
And a USB dongle in both computers ( .802.11 B G N ).. ....then after hours of unnessacary work ...
Yes I made a bit of a mess of sorting it out ... if I had to do it again it would only take 20 mins  instead of 9 hours of pulling my hair out ....

BUT ........now they both work , ! and are both on the internet , one slowly , the old one . and one as before ...

But now I am trying to work out the file sharing bit so I can send files from one to the other .....
I read some things online but the features they say to look for i do not have  or be able to find ....

That means its time to bug you guys again .....I have a network ..SSID ...called ,.MY Network on both computers ...and then I am stuck ....
remeber its winXP ....

This should get you started:

Open up My Computer
Right-Click the drive you want to share
Select "Sharing & Security"
Acknowledge warning
Follow instructions.

Best to create a folder just for sharing, you don't really want to share the entire "C"-drive.  You can also create a separate partition just for sharing.

Which Tenda wireless router did you get?

Hi again ....The Tenda router I got was labeled as

Tenda N3 Mini b/g/n 150Mbps WiFI Wireless-N Router AP English Firmware

from E bay for 20 bucks free postage from China  :D although i had to wait  a bit ... no hurry though ..
anyway .
I am having a look at what you wrote for me and will get back to you if it works , or not , since XP already has folders called shared folders i was trying to see if they worked first ... the problem was just trying to see the other computer

Anyway I will try and see how I get on ........
thanks agian

Yes that looks like it .... but I should still be able to see the other compuetr to share files by wif fi ..correct ....
It Also has something called wi-fi direct , but im not sure what it is or how it works , i think it is for file sharing but  you have to turn the internet bit off ,,, i did that once and it took me ages to get it back on ....
I will have to read up on it  first .....
What would be the easiest way to share files over wi-fi /.?
