My laptop loads up Windows XP, and a few seconds after the desktop icons start loading up, it goes "Shutting Down" mode automatically. Any experience with this??
Thank You

Sounds like a shutdown prank. When turning the computer on, press F8 repeatedly. When prompted, select Safe Mode with networking. Look through your startup folder for a BATCH file or a shortcut do SHUTDOWN.EXE. If you see the shortcut, delete it. If you see a batch file, right-click abd select EDIT. Look through the code for shutdown or shutdown.exe. If you find the batch file contains that, delete it. Restart your computer in normal mode and it should be fine.

unless they stuck it in the registrey (not as hard as it sounds)
programs like startup manager could do it

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? What are you talking about, registry? That has nothing to do with it. It only takes a skiddie with the LEAST amount of computer knowledge to make a shutdown prank. Make a batch file that only contains SHUTDOWN.EXE and put it in the startup folder. A baby could do it.

no
i am saying you could make it autoshutdown by putting the location of the batch file
in the startup section of the registriy
thats how antivirus and stuff start without being in startup

Can you boot in safe mode?

No skiddie is smart enough to put it there.
@OP, is there a chance someone ranging in age from 10-18 would have access to your computer.

This is also a symptom of a stuck CPU fan.

So here the update:
My bad, I wrote this problem was occuring on Windows XP, well it's actually on Vista (if it makes a difference in the fix).
I tried going to the Startup folder from the Start -> Programs menu. There was only one program in there and it wasn't one that would have had the Shutdown.exe file.
I also tried going to MSCONFIG -> Startup to see if that Shutdown.exe file was in there, but saw nothing that might have resembled it.
Any new suggestions?
Thanks,
Cruz

Turn it on and check to see if the fan is moving.

How did you do the above, since you're saying, the computer is shutting down right away?

Safe Mode...

Disable "Restart on error" feature...
1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.
You may see some error message. If so, post back what it says.

Safe Mode...
Well this is a clue then...finally.
Does it restart in safemode on it's own or is it fine ? ?
In safemode Go to Control Panel/System/System Properties/Advanced and uncheck "auto restart on errors"...
Also while in there check Device Manager for any Yellow !'s...
Re-boot.
You will now get BSOD's instead of restarts...post the entire BSOD here including the gibberish.
Sounds like a wayward or corrupt driver at this point...
