What OS are you running? You could try restoring your computer settings to an earlier time dependent on what OS you are running.

Try:

In order to get "the CD-ROM drive icon back" or "make it work", perform the following steps. This problem, generally, is caused due to the CD-RW software (Adaptec) installed in the system:

NOTE: These steps involve Windows Registry modifications and hence we suggest you take a backup of the registry before applying the solution.

Registry Backup:
----------------
1. Click Start, Run and type regedit.
2. Click on Registry menu and select Export to File option.
3. Select the radio button beside "All" option.
3. Give a file name (say regbackup) and save it onto the desktop.

Registry Modification:
----------------------
1. Click Start, Run and type regedit.
2. Click "+" beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
3. Click "+" beside System.
3. Click "+" beside CurrentControlSet.
4. Click "+" beside Control.
5. Click "+" beside Class.
6. Click "+" beside {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
7. Find the values "UpperFilters" and/or "LowerFilters".
8. Highlight and right-click on it. Select Delete and click OK to the warning message.
9. Perform the deletion of filters procedure on the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet1\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet2\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

11. From Registry menu, select Exit.

Now, remove the entry for the CD device(s) in the Device Manager and then restart the system.

I'm still confused as to what exactly is being accomplished here, or what COULD be accomplished here, for that matter.

Guys it's a 4 year old thread...

Can I post, too?  Can I, huh?  Can I?  Please?  Can I?

Let's see...4 years old...and the OP has since left us...

What else can we add to this thread to make it more interesting?

I wonder if the OP has tried purchasing another computer since their original post?  That may fix the problem...

I give up........ ::)

Don't give up yet, patio...

You can always have someone move this thread to Off Topic...and have a blast making fun of the people who are still trying to help this person.
