This is the reply topic for "Webmasters Best Friends" (the draft area)
--Zylstra

Very nice start to an excellent and useful guide, Zylstra.
.tk domains are available for free. (http://www.dot.tk/)  However, it includes ads on one side.
110mb will give you MySQL, and other features, for a small fee or 50 posts on their forum.
And the restriction is only on boxes 4, 5, 9 and 10.
Read more. (http://www.110mb.com/forum/important-changes-to-box45910-t16373.0.html)
I recommend reading all of their features, terms and conditions before starting hosting with them or any free host as well - sometimes features you just assume they have are not available.

Zylstra, what do you mean there's no such thing as a free domain name? There are several web hosting sites that offer this. Could you explain?

We mustn't forget about html editors such as Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net) or Quanta (http://quanta.kdewebdev.org). (depending on the os)

Also a few links to html/css/javascript/etc. reference sites are necessary.
MSDN Library (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa155073.aspx) - Microsoft Technical Reference for html, css, and other scripting languages
w3.org (http://www.w3.org) is commonly linked, although I don't think it's very helpful
webmonkey (http://www.webmonkey.com) - Tons of good tutorials for html, css, javascript, php, flash, and more
Dynamic Drive (http://www.dynamicdrive.com) - free scripts to use in your site

Also,
Apache Friends (http://apachefriends.org) - Set up an Apache, MySQL, PHP server on your own computer (easily). Either for testing before you upload, or for your actual server.

Updated, thanks, michaewlewis, your information has been added

I'm still working out a better format, if you could recommend a better BBC code formatting, it would be wonderful

Is this post ever going to be made into a sticky?
btw, Z, what's BBC code formatting?

Thanks for reminding me the topic existed (funny how things suddenly leave your mind...)

http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcsk9jfv_43hs8cwj is a preview of the most recent version, and it contains the raw BBC code that the forum would have

Anyways, I think I am going to add some quick info, ask for approval (by anyone who is watching this topic to see if they think its all in line or not) and merge all replies off the topic

Right then, everyone, go ahead and look and tell me what you all think (look above, don't use the Google docs link)

In the final version, your replies will be split into a new topic, so you wont loose your post count or your drafting ideas

HTML-Kit (http://www.download.com/HTML-Kit/3000-2181_4-10636417.html), a free syntax-highlighting editor that I swear by. It has a preview (IE-Rendering only), Split view, and can open pages in any browser it detects. Common tags can be inserted via editable templates found in various tabs.

Could we change this title to xampp instead of Apache Friends? Apache Friends is actually the url for the website where you can download xampp.....
thanks

oh, and the link to w3.org..... I mentioned it, hoping someone else could explain why it's recommended.... I don't think it needs to be in the list. :)

Xampp link name updated

w3 has been updated, I didnt realize how I gave its description (must not have thoroughly read it)
w3.org is very important, since it allows for proper standardization reference and has many tutorials

Let's put a few more paid web hosts on the list....
I've used www.lunarpages.com before and they were very good to work with. 24x7 support, php, mysql, cpanel, and ftp; unlimited emails, subdomains, parked domains and mysql databases.

I've also been recommending www.godaddy.com because of their popularity and they've been around a very long time. I've never actually used them, however.

Updated
I had a teacher who had used GoDaddy, its a trusted service, so I went ahead and added it
Thanks for the information, Michaewlewis

Regarding:  http://www.bullseyefreewebhosting.com

That used to be mbhosting.com, didn't it?    and it was owned by Flame, of here on CH?

Is it down?
I've only tried on and off a few times earlier today, and it wouldn't load.

Thanks, WillyW.

Yes, I agree, Webmasters Best Friends warrants being a sticky.  But, I find it odd to mention just two "Pay-for hosts".  There so many hosting services and many offer the features Zylstra mentioned.  I use http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/

There are thousands :)
Specifically for free hosts, I really do want user input from those who have experienced services.
There are some pretty cheap hosts out there offering great services, there are some pretty cheap ones not so great at all, there are some expensive ones that offer crap, there are scams

I have only used 1 pay for host, but there are so many... TCH sounds better than mine. $4, 40GB, 1.4MB Disk space. Thats pretty dang good
