Title: Cell Phone Charging
Post by: Flame on March 17, 2006, 09:13:11 PM
Hey guys, I heard this from someone but I'm not sure if its true or not... Whenever it is possible for me to have my cell phone plugged-in, it's in. Someone told me that if you never let the battery get used that much (not being plugged-in) and you leave it charging for every use that it meses with the battery meter, and it is not accurate... Has anyone heard of this?

Did these people say *how* it messes with the meter? It doesn't seem likely.

They didn't. I don't think it's true, but I figured someone here might know better than I lol

What kind of battery do you have, Li-Polymer, or Li-Ion?  Re Li-Ion, check out >this article< (http://pcproblemsolver.dyndns.biz/notebook_battery_life_tips.pdf) that I wrote on the subject which applies equally to laptop batteries.  Li-Polymer batteries should be cared for in the same way that I outline in that article, although the technology is a little different.

One thing that complicates the issue is the use of "smart batteries".  These are the ones with a built in "battery meter" (I think it unlikely that a mobile phone battery is smart).  Smart batteries require the periodic use of a dedicated program that fully discharges and recharges them to overcome some errors that creep in over time.

Flame these days with newer models of phone it doesnt matter, thats why you get in car hands fee kits now alot more becasue the batteries can cope with it. I think it was with the old nikel ones that it did mess with the batteries and screw up the life of it.

The battery is a Lithium Ion 3.7v  ...

you dont need to worry man i think something like that is what messed up the early IPOD batteries but with with the technology now you dont need to worry.

I was just wondering if it was true. I've noticed that my battery meter seems to show low battery life rather quickly sometimes, but it's not a problem.

Yea exactly what ROSS said, it used to be a problem but nothing to worry about thses days, however try not to overchagre it. By this i mean leaving it on charge for a long period of time, like over night. Batteries do have overcharge protection but it has be known to fail, as my friend found out the hard way :(

That's my concern. Every moment (while at home) that I am able to have my phone plugged in, it's in lol

hhhmm... Interesting... That brings up another issue... If you talk on that phone for about 10 minutes, plugged in or not, it get quite hot! Not so much in the back, but the front where you put your face!  :P

Could that be body heat?

Oh no  Even if you don't touch it to your face or anything. If I use the headset for instance, it still burns up...

Mine starts to burn if I talk for longer than 30 minutes or so, which happens quiet often. The battery also goes down WAY faster when you are talking to someone.

You all know that mobile phones operate at the microwave level, right?  And you know what happens to things when you put them in a microwave...?  :)

Do you think their brains are getting fried? :D

Well it is techniacally possible to get cancer from overuse of a cellular device if it's close to your ear all the time. But it's so rare that I don't think anyone here has to worry about it at all ;)

Well that's what the hippies are saying over here in the UK. Apparently if you talk on the phone for any amount of time you will get a brain tumor. and a Hands free kit just Channel's it into your head.

I dont know if its True or not but id watch out never a less.

Cell phones contain a low amount of radiation. If you talk on teh cell phone nonstop for most of your life, then it's possible. However, we can't be certain. They've only accused French Fries of being cancer causing for the past years, just to find out now that it is not. This could just be another theory... They also say don't get too close to the TV... They do it too lol

As with many new technologies, concerns have arisen about the effects on health from using a mobile telephone. There is a small amount of scientific evidence for an increase in certain types of rare tumors (cancer) in long-time, heavy users. More recently a pan-European study provided significant evidence of genetic damage under certain conditions. Some researchers also report the mobile phone industry has interfered with further research on health risks. So far, however, the World Health Organization Task Force on EMF effects on health has no definitive conclusion on the veracity of these allegations. (See also electromagnetic radiation hazard.) It is generally thought, however, that RF is incapable of producing any more than heating effects, as it is considered non-ionizing radiation; in other words, it lacks the energy to disrupt molecular bonds such as occurs in genetic mutations.

i also heard that when a phone battery starts to get old and doesnt hold its charge properly u can reset it by wrapping it in a couple of freezer bags and putting the battery in the freezer overnight. i thought this was someone's idea of a joke but many of my friends have done it and reckon it works and if your battery is stuffed anyway wot do u have to lose.....

I've hard that too but I don't think it works. There's no proof that it does anyway.

If your cell phone runs out of battery and you don't have your charger lick the battery (the gold things) and it will charge a tiny bit and you can use it for like 10 minutes.

:-D

Never EVER put your battery in the freezer!!!

How would you like to fry the battery's internal overcharge protection mechanism, so that next time you use it, it explodes?  Not kidding.  Lithium is unstable stuff.  KEEP IT OUT OF THE FREEZER!

And incidentally, licking your battery will NOT increase it's charge.  Think about it!!!

Hey it worked for me. I don't see how it doesn't make sense.

If you mean the tongue thing, putting your tongue across the contacts of a battery does not insert the battery into a charging circuit.  Taking a battery out and reinserting it sometimes creates a "capicitance" effect, whereby the last dregs of energy in the battery become slightly more readily available.  Sorry, but I don't think your tongue has anything to do with.  But if you enjoy the whole battery-tongue experience, by all means do continue!  ;)

My grandmother refrigerates batteries. See, when you leave batteries out in the heat, it shortens their life. How, I don't know. However, the refrigerator is never warm when functioning properly, so it provides protection against the heat. :)
