Out of the blue, my keyboard doesn't work...error code 41. I have downloaded the driver again, used Reg Cure, and still nothing. What do I do?
-
Have you tried the advice from Microsoft on error code 41 ?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310123
-
I Googled the error code, and I didn't see any thing from microsoft about it.
-
The below is from the link I provided.
Code 41
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Recommended resolution
A driver was loaded but Windows cannot find the device. This error occurs when Windows does not detect a non-Plug and Play device.
If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, install the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver. If the hardware was not removed, obtain a new or updated driver for the device.
If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, a newer version of the driver might be needed. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Performance and Maintenance on Control Panel, click System, and on the Hardware tab, click Add Hardware Wizard.
On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

how did you go
-
Yes, I done that. And it doesn't do me any >:( good. No new drivers are available, I have reloaded the drivers to the keyboard, unplugged the keyboard and rebooted, plugged it back like a new device...NOTHING!!! >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

Can you try another keyboard,or try the one you have on another
computer?
-
new keyboard doesn't work either. I have even tried using a USB port. Still nothing. >:(
-
Maybe you need to reinstall motherboard drivers.
-
How & why would I do that? Everything is workng but the keyboard ???
Should I go ahead and just reinstll Windows?

Ok, I downloaded and installed all new MB driver/upgrades from the site. Nothing is changed. The keyboard still is not found by XP. It even says its plugged-in!! I have used another keyboard and hooked it to a USB port, nothing!
Do I, or should I reinstall windows, or will buying a new keyboard work. :-\ :-\
-
You said:
new keyboard doesn't work either
Did you actually try another keyboard?
-
Yes, I tried another keyboard...a generic that I had.
-
What do you mean by "generic"?
What types are those two keyboards? PS/2 (rounded jack), or USB (flat jack)?
Did you switch them with computer off?
Did you try to uninstall keyboard from Device Manager, restart computer, and let Windows find it again?
What do you mean by:
The keyboard still is not found by XP. It even says its plugged-in!!
How does Windows say, it's plugged in?
-
Generic: off the shelf no name brand from Wal Mart.
I know the difference between a ps/2 and a usb. My HP keyboard that come w/ the machine is ps/2. It doesnt' work right now, it is source of all this dialogue. The wal-mart keyboard is also a ps/2. It didn't ork either...yes, I rebooted trying both and separate times, with the computer off. I went and bought an adapter ps/2 to usb from radio shack, and tried it too, following the same minute and correct processes detailed above.
As for the device manager, I have uninstalled and reinstalled about 5 times now. I bought PC Tools Registry Mechanic, because it said it fixes this code 41 problem...it don't! The error code says, "windows has loaded the device drivers, but cannot locate device. Under hardware, it say that the keyboard is plugged into the port.

I'm still looking for some more solution, but...
Will your keyboard work in Safe Mode?
-
Another thing to try...Look around in your BIOS...maybe some setting there.
-
I went into the setup, and the kb works there. But nothing there is set wrong.
-
Will your keyboard work in Safe Mode?
-
no
-
I'm truly stuck here.
Windows reinstall/repair? Do you have Windows CD, or Recovery CD?
-
Thats what I ended up doing. A complete restore to how it came. Wiped out all my drivers for stuff i had, but the keyboard works now. God...what a nightmare. Thanks for your time and effort. ;)

You're welcome 8) 8) 8)
Wiped out all my drivers for stuff i had, but the keyboard works now
I tried to avoid reinstall, as long, as I could...LOL
-
Yeah, it was a choice between a complete windows reinstall, or a system restore. I guess I took the lesser of the two evils. ;)
