When you create a user in active directory an they sign on to the domain using a foreign machine. Does there data get saved to the machine or to the Server including desktop settings?

Supposedly you can use a roaming profile, where all data that can be saved on the server will be. (this excludes temporary files). In practice, I've never seen this actually used. Our school uses a domain with Active Directory but profile settings are all saved to the local computer on login.
