Which are then most popular free email services?

AOL, Gmail, Hotmail , Yahoo are what comes to mind.
But some on the list are lessor known:
Inbox.com, Fastmail.fm, mail.com, Lycos mail,Care2, Zenbe, GMX, Gawab
Dora?

Been using Gmail for a long time (back when it was invite only). It's easy to use yet still powerful. Great spam filter. Love it.

Gmail is the most technically advanced of any of them. It can be used strictly as webmail or it can be POP3-enabled for use of an email client and it can even be IMAP-enabled.
Edit: Well, after reading the article, I see some of the others also offer POP and/or IMAP capability.
