Title: Question After Installing SP2
Post by: fullbug on September 26, 2006, 09:09:14 AM
I'm on Windoes XP Pro, and finally installed SP2 a few days ago, and noticed  after that when I run AdAware, Ewido, and Super Anti-Spyware they dont find ANY spyware at all, before when I ran these programs there would always be at least 4-5 of general spyware, even with my firewall, ect, Ewido in particular would always find about 10 items, now nothing, is it possible when I installed SP2 it messed with these programs and I would have to reinstall them? I did notice after installing SP2 that a few programs were messed up and had to be reinstalled, like Microsoft Office, think that might have happened here? I understand SP2 protects against Spyware better, but it seems odd to me they would find NOTHING every time I run them, any thoughts?

Did you check to see if the programs were properly configured?

Configured in what sense? These programs pretty much run themselves....

As in are they doing a full scan, are all the folders tagged, etc..

Yeah, I always run them in full scan mode, takes a long time but I'm kinda paranoid about spyware and stuff on my computers...

If you are running scans regularly and they are not turning up anything wrong and you are worried chances are you are paranoid...

Maybe your right, I still think its strange how I went from 5-10 infections every scan to zero though...

fullbug, keep in mind that the major benefit of SP2 is better security.  To quote Top 10 Reasons to Deploy Windows XP Service Pack 2 (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/sp2top.mspx): "Windows XP SP2 is, first and foremost, about helping you stay secure."  In other words, you should expect to see less frequent finding of adware/spyware when you run your adware/spyware programs.

You should be worried if you're still using Internet Explorer, though.  :P

I have never checked out Thunderbird, pretty happy with Avant though, they have a new feature when you can upload your bookmarks from any computer, thats a feature I havent seen anywhere else yet....

Thunderbird is an E-mail client, though. Isn't Avant a browser?

I like Evolution as well, which is a free Linux (Ubuntu) E-mail client.

Yeah, Avant is a browser, I thought thats what you were talking about, are you saying using something like Yahoo E-mail can cause problems?

Nah, not really. I just prefer Mozilla Thunderbird over Outlook Express.

Web based mail is actually quite save to use because the contents can't be automatically executed.

One thing I HATE about this new SP2 is everyday at 5:00 pm the automatic updates kicks in, and I cant turn the thing off, when I go into the automatic update window, it doesnt give me the option of turning it off, I can turn off my virus protection and firewall, but not the auto updates, anyone know how to shut that *censored* thing off? When I didnt realize it was running while doing something it rebooted the computer when it was done and I lost something I was working on.... >:(

Automatic Updates are a good thing, but if you want to change them:

Start -> Configuration -> Control panel -> Automatic Updates.

I think you're looking at the Security Center, from there you can't really control anything.

I did that, still wont let me change anything, I have no problem with updates but would like to update when I want and not when I'm doing something....

That's strange, you have Admin rights and can't change the setting?

You could try changing the settings using the group policy editor, maybe configuration of automatic updates is disabled.

Start > Run > type gpedit.msc

then go to...
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update

then click on Configure Automatic Updates

then set it to Enabled and choose config #3 "Auto download and notify for install"

Alternately, you could also just use the "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates installations" policy instead. If that doesn't work either you could just disable the Automatic Update service and just go to windowsupdate.com yourself when you want to update.

I tried the first thing you said but as you can see the 'configure automatic updates' option isnt even listed.... :(
By the way, thanx for the detailed instructions....

I'm running Windows XP Home with AVG and SP2. I recently installed MicroSoft Antispyware Guard and since then nothing gets in. I'm clean as a whistle and yes, I'm running Ie.

Why?IE is a big security risk, and other browsers have more features, like tabbed browsing....
