Title: Wireless Security and Connection Problems
Post by: sorbetsurprise on September 01, 2008, 12:34:09 PM
I was wondering if anyone could help.  I have just purchased a Belkin Wireless Router tomake my laptop and computer both work wirelessly but I was worried about security so found an online help guide to encripting my wireless signal.  I have done this and the computer is connected and working fine but I am having problems with my laptop.

When it is wired it works fine but if I swap to wireless it says the settings saved on my computer do not match.  I have tried changing the network security key but it does not seem to make any difference, is there any other settings I need to change?  Sorry if this is unclear.

My laptop is running Windows Vista, and was using WPA encription

What operating system for the host...and which is on the laptop?

Have you tried rebooting the laptop and searching for wireless signals?

I'm using my laptop as the host, I'm in rented accomodation and I can't drill through the walls to connect the main computer as host.  Have tried rebooting it, I can find the signal it just won't let me connect even when I put in the correct key

Could be that the laptop's firewall could be blocking the desktop computer from connecting to the wireless connection.

You still haven't told us what operating systems are on each machine.

Also need to know what firewall software you're using on each machine.

sorbetsurprise, specifically what type of WPA did you set up  in your router and your laptop?  A reference: WPA and WPA2 (http://wireless-comm.blogspot.com/2008/05/wpa-and-wpa2.html)

WPA/WPA2  AES with Pre-Shared Key PSK as this was what I was advised to do

My D-Link DI-524 router is set at WPA-PSK. In my Notebook PC running Vista, I have my encyrption set at:

Security Type: WPA-Personal
Encryption Type: TKIP

Give that a try.

Thanks, I tried it and I'm still having the same problem.  When  try to connect wirelessly and enter the code there is already one there and it doesn't seem to let me change it.  At the moment I am right clicking and selecting properties and changing it there on the connect to a network page. Is there somewhere else I can/need to change it?

I'm still having problems, If I completely reboot the router with the manufacturer's settings,is there a guide you would recommend for setting up security?
