Title: Hard Drive Reformatted

I run Microsoft Windows XP the hard drive was reformatted, but I realized that I had some very important files on that computer. A friend told me that if nothing had been written over since formatting it was possible to still retrieve info or files from preformat. Is this the case and how would I do it?
