Title: Can't access my university website; other sites ok
Post by: Drd on June 10, 2009, 03:43:17 PM
Hello I'm an online college professor and I can't access my university website although all other sites come through ok.

 I use a Firefox browser on XP. Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042316 Firefox/3.0.10  I have a broad band connection.  I use Windows XP, service pack 3.

I've contacted the tech support at the university and they say that the site is UP, and they have no problems with it. But when i try to access it, through either my Firefox or IE browser, I get this:

Address Not Found

Firefox can't find the server at mentors.ncu.edu.

The browser could not find the host server for the provided address.

    * Did you make a mistake when typing the domain? (e.g. "ww.mozilla.org" instead of "www.mozilla.org")
    * Are you certain this domain address exists?  Its registration may have expired.
    * Are you unable to browse other sites?  Check your network connection and DNS server settings.
    * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy?  Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing.

Try again

At the bottom left of the page is a box that says: done. At first, at the bottom left the address of the site shows, then, when I get the above remark, I also get the "done" message there.

The university site for teachers is password protected but not even the entry page comes up. The tech people even gave me a "direct link" but that didn't work. I also tried going to the history section and clicking on a previous history entry for the site, but the same thing comes up.

I use AVG anti virus and did a scan and everything was ok.

Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

In peace

Dr. D'Elia

Broni: When I try to access what you gave me, it takes a  long time, and then I get the URL at the top, a blank page, and "done" in the bottom left.

What's going on here? Why is only the  university address, and now this one, inaccessible for me.  I can go everywhere else except to work!

Thanks for your help.

Broni: I've found out something: When I try to connect to my university site through my ADSL broadband I get the error message. But when I use my old dial-up connection I do get through. I've been using the ADSL for over a month now with no problems.  What could be causing this to suddenly not be able to get through to the university site?
Thanks
Dr. D.

Three things to try:
1. I made a mistake, putting backslashes instead forward slashes in the above address. So it's : http://63.149.31.34
2. If you use router, try to connect straight to modem, and see, if you have same problem.
3. Try Safe Mode with Networking.

Broni: When I use that number thing that you sent, I get this message:

Secure Connection Failed

63.149.31.34 uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for the following names:
  *.ncu.edu , ncu.edu

(Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)

    * This could be a problem with the server's configuration, or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.

    * If you have connected to this server successfully in the past, the error may be temporary, and you can try again later.

Or you can add an e

Make sure, your computer date is correct.

And how would I do that? I went to the little time box in the corner and clicked on that and it showed the correct date.

Also, please note my previous post where I say that my broadband connection is not connecting to the site, but I found out that an old dial-up connection I have does connect.  So does this mean anything to you?

By the way, on the bottom of the error message for the .63..... that you sent, there was a place to "make an exception". So I'm trying to tell the computer to make an exception.  It has done and brought up a site that looks similar to, but not identical to the one I usually use. Can I trust this to be authentic?  Should I try and deal with that site?

Thanks

Broni: I don't know what you mean by a router. Sorry.

And, where do I do the "Safe Mode with Networking"? I'm using the firefox browser.

Thanks

Restart computer, and keep tapping F8 key until menu appears:

Select SECOND option.

Broni: F8 doesn't do anything for my computer. Should I try a different key?

Thanks

No. All computers use F8 key.
What brand, and model is it?
I assume, you're TAPPING, not PRESSING F8 key??

Hello: I don't know about the brand and model. It's a composite I think.

When I tap and tap the F8 key, I get a  note that syas Please install Express Recovery 2 for gigabyte CD title. Then, the computer froze. So I shut off and started it again. This time I pushed the f12 button and then it froze again.  So I don't think I should fool around with those buttons on start up. I'm afraid I'll ruin something.

Would you like to try taking access of the computer; or do you have anything else you can suggest?

Thank you
DrD

I'm sorry that I don't know what you mean by saying that "If I use router connect directly through modem".  I don't know what a router is or if I use one or not. Sorry to be so uninformed.

Do you have only 1 computer connected to the ADSL router?

Oh, by router do you mean the little black box with the yellow lights on the front? Yes, there is just one computer connected to this.

And, now that I think I  understand you, as I said, my dial-up, which goes through a modem, does make the connection to the site.

Turn off computer, disconnect your modem from the power source for 1 minute.
Power the modem back on. Restart computer.

Bruno: I just want you to know that the ADSL people resolved the problem. It took a couple of days but now I am able to connect to the site through my ADSL once again. Thanks for your patience and help.
