Title: windows problem
Post by: mmsw on April 17, 2009, 05:57:01 PM
I have a Dell laptop, Inspiron E1705 running windows XP

About a month ago my start bar and icon disappeared, I contacted microsoft support and had been working with them, I will cut and paste what they had me do:

1) MICROSOFT RESPONSE:
Please be assured you have successfully contacted the correct support team and I will be working with you to address your concerns as quickly as possible.

From your description, I understand that when trying to start the computer the Start button the desktop icons were missing. You downloaded a hotfix but it didn’t work. If there has been any misunderstanding, please let me know.

I understand the inconvenience this issue has caused. Please be assured that I will do my best to assist you in resolving it.

I suggest we perform the following steps to troubleshoot our issue:

1. Start your Windows XP to Desktop.

2. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys to open the Task Manager.

3. Click the File menu and click "New Tasks (run...)"

4. Type "CMD" (without quotation marks) in the box and click OK.

5. Type following command into the prompt window and press ENTER:

Reg  add  "HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RpcSs"  /v  ObjectName  /t  REG_SZ  /d  LocalSystem

6. Restart your computer and test the issue again.

If our issue still occurs, I suggest we perform the following steps to troubleshoot our issue:

1. Press the Ctrl + Alt + Del keys to open the Task Manager.

2. Click the File menu and click "New Tasks (run...)", type REGEDIT, and click OK.

3. Click Export under the File menu, choose all under Export range, type filename for this backup registry, and click Save.

Then please refer to the following steps.

4. Expand to HKey_local_machine\software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\Winlogon in the left pane.

5. In the right pane, find the "Shell" value.

6. Right clicked the Shell value and selected Modify and changed the Value to "explorer.exe" (without the quotation marks).

7. Click OK and restart the computer to check the issue.

8. Restart the computer to check the issue again.

Does the issue exist?

MY REPLY AFTER FOLLOWING ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS:

Ok, I had to use suggestion #2. The computer does now load windows..albeit the icons are large and it looks different...so, now what do I do.
I do have the task bar showing, but an error window came up.
at the top of the window it says:

hpqth08.exe  net framework Initilization Error

inside the window the message is:

Please set registry key HKLM\Software\microsoft\.NETFramework\InstallRoot to point to the .NET Framework install location

Thanks for you help...this has been interesting.

MICROSOFT RESPONCE:

hanks for your reply. I understand that the computer can boot up now. But we kept getting some error messages related to .Net Framework.

The issue can occur if the relevant files was corrupted.

I suggest we perform a System Restore to back up the system to a state before this issue occurred.

Note: If you have some important documents or files which were created after the restore point, please copy them to My Documents. By doing this, even if you back the system up to the initial status, the documents will be saved in My Documents.

To restore your system to a previous state, we can use the following steps:

1. Before you start, please close all open files and close all open programs.

2. Click "Start"; click "Programs or All Programs"; click "Accessories"; click "System Tools"; and click "System Restore". The System Restore user interface should appear.

3. Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" and click "Next".

4. From the restore points available, select an appropriate restore point when your system was working correctly and click "Next".

5. Click "Next" again. The restore process will run and your system will restart automatically.

6. After restarting, check whether your system functions correctly now. If not, you can undo your last restoration or select another restore point in the System Restore user interface.

MY REPLY:

I cannot find a restore point avaliable when the computer was working properly. The only date it is allowing me to use is April 7, and my system was not working properly then. What should I do?

They had me insert my original Windows XP disk and reinstall.

I am still getting the .Net error as well as this :

" The requested look up key was not found in any activation content."

So while windows is loading fine now, the start bar and the icons are showing...these error messages don't allow me to do anything

I appreciate any help!!! :-X

You could try uninstalling .NET and reinstall it. You can uninstall it in add/remove programs. Most programs today require the .NET extension so the reinstall link is as follows:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

Hope that helps!

Hello mmsw
This error pretends to some kind of  Hewett-Packard. Do U have some kinda Hp (Hewett-Packard) software? Try uninstall all HP software. Reboot and let us know if this fix the problem.

Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: milesman on April 17, 2009, 07:27:47 PM
right. but remember to reinstall it. Most applications need it to operate.

Preform the step milesman states. Be sure to remove all .net frame from the add n remove. Next try doing a Windows update. After the Window update do a check disk and degrag. The chck disk and defrag will not fix the problem, but will help in getting the HDD in some kinda organized condition. If u have  Win XP CD boot from it and do like if u r going to install Windows, but do not CHOOSE THE OPTION REFORMAT. Keep following the instruction and u will get to a option that states fix this Window Install. Select this option and let it run. Write back with the results.

Dell resource CD

Intell graphics media accelerator driver

Synaptics Pointing Device

Maybe part of the .NET framework has become corrupted. I'll post in a second.

U should be seeing a lot more then just those 5 items. Follow my previous post about the Fix Win install. U are missing wind installers, .Net Frame I see u did not post any A/V SW nor Anti malware SW.

Sometimes the framework is in the Change/Remove Programs section of the Add/Remove Programs list. Try to find something like:

Microsoft .NET Framework (English)

Hope that works for  you! :)

Another copy of this set up is running. Please wait until the other set up is complete before attempting to run again.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en

and when I do I get that message that won't let me go any where:

the required look up key was not found in any active activation content

Yes, uninstalling will most likely fix your problem.  Here is how you do it:

1) Start your computer with the install disk in the drive. When (presumably) the dell    logo comes up. Press F12 (Or F8) Depending on your OS version.

2) A screen will most likely show up that says " Push any key to boot from CD" Do as is says. Hey that rhymes!

3) A DOS like screens (Quite ugly) That says " Setup is loading files..." will come up. This could take a while depending on your processor speed.

4) After all this, setup will ask you something like:
"Install XP" Press F1, or whatever it tells you to do.

5) Another screen will ask you what partition to install XP on. Select the one with the biggest number.

6) A screen may appear asking you if you want to continue. It also may say that a "Windows" folder is already on that certain partition. Say yes. F1 or something.

7) A license agreement will come up telling you a bunch of jibberish. Bypass that.

8) Finally it will copy all the files.

9)The real setup will come up, asking personal question (HRRM) :oRemember, it will come to a point when it will ask you for the installation type.  Do a clean install. The rest will just present itself.

:)

Post by: milesman on April 17, 2009, 08:38:04 PM
Hmm.. that's never happened to me. Oh, first format the partition. If you go back to the select partition page it should display that option. After it formats then install xp.
Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: mmsw on April 17, 2009, 08:40:45 PM
I am back at the partition page.
My options are:
partition1 [NTFS}     95386 MB <53329 free>

Unpartitioned space      8 MB
Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: milesman on April 17, 2009, 08:42:28 PM
Bummer. Maybe you should go ahead an install xp anyways on that partition. You will be able to delete the other os later.
Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: mmsw on April 17, 2009, 08:43:12 PM
On partition1?  :o
Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: milesman on April 17, 2009, 08:44:35 PM
yeh. I know it's not recommended. But that's only because your apps won't be seen in the new os.   ;)
Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: mmsw on April 17, 2009, 08:48:08 PM
OMG..another question

it is asking me if I wwant to:

format the partition using NTFS file system <quick>

format the partiotion using NTFS file system   or..

leave the current file system in tact

I am assuming I do not want the third option   ::)
Title: Re: windows problem
Post by: milesman on April 17, 2009, 08:49:26 PM
