Title: java update problem
Post by: jlaak5 on June 05, 2008, 03:46:56 PM
Hello all,

I am hoping somebody can help me.  I am unable to updated my java.  I am currently ruunning jre  1.6.0-03.  Whenever I try to download the update I get the message"Installation of update to the java platform failed".  I am hesitant to remove java all together and reload for the fear that it won't let me.

I am running windows XP.

Anybody have any ideas??

Thanks,

Jim

Jim...

Go to the following link:  http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=20287

Download and save the package to your desktop.

Close any other applications and then double-click the package to launch the installer.

Once the installation is complete...you can safely remove the other java package currently residing in the Add/Remove Programs of the Control Panel.

Keep us posted.

Saviour,

I tried that, & when I double click on the installer nothing happens.

BTW...what browser do you use?  Version?  Also...what Service Pack are you using for Windows XP?  SP1...SP2...SP3?

What malware protection are you using?  Is it updated?

When's the last time you visited Windows Update to download and install "high-priority" updates?

I'm assuming there may be a setting that's preventing you from running this partcular executable.

It may be one of your Malware programs.

If it were me...I'd disconnect from the Internet...beit wired or a wireless connection.

Temporarily disable your malware protection...then try to install the package.

If it works...and installs.  Re-enable your protection and connect back to the Internet.

Open the new Java applet from your Control Panel and see if it will update.  It may not need to update, but you can try anyway.

If it installed with no issues, then you can safely remove the other Java Runtime Environment.

Do you have browsers closed, when doubleclicking on installation file?

Did you try what Saviour said?

May seem like a silly question, however how do I disable my malware.  I was able to disable spyware blaster, couldn't find any way to disable protection in adaware, or spypbot.  do I uninstall and reinstall?

You should be able to right click the icons in the system tray to select "disable" and/or "exit"...depending on the program.

Adaware, and Spybot don't run in real-time with one exception.
Do you have Spybot's TeaTimer icon in systray?

Which Windows Installer do you have?

To see which version of Microsoft Windows Installer is installed, do the following:

1.  Locate the file MSI.DLL. (Usually located in C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 )
2.  Select the file and right-click on it.
3.  Choose "Properties" and click on the "Version" tab.

Let us know which version is installed.

Hmmm...that's the latest.

When you double-click the java package installer you downloaded to your desktop...does anything happen at all?

Are there any error messages?

Anything?

Try Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
If that doesn't help, install fresh version of Windows Installer: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803

You can also try this, if Broni's suggestion doesn't work:

Quote
Go to Windows' Control Panel, click on the Java Cup to launch Java Control Panel

- go to "Advanced" tab -> <APPLET> tag support
- click to enable Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla and NS
- click OK- restart your browser.

Once you've done the following...visit the following page to see if you can add the latest version through your browser:  http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

If it does install...verify the installation successfully installed by visiting the following link:  http://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp?detect=jre&try=1

are there any alternatives to java that I can try?
Title: Re: java update problem
Post by: stevejohnson1958 on June 05, 2008, 09:13:08 PM
To me...if something were blocking the install...there should be some type of error, or warning.  In this case...nothing...which makes it even more strange.

I think I'll turn it over to you, Broni...for a malware check.  That's the only other thing I can think of that may be causing the failure of an exe file.

Not too many issues here, but let's clean it up...

1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

2. Close all windows, except for HijackThis.

3. Put a checkmark next to the following HijackThis entries (some entries will be checkmarked to disable unnecessary startups; in those cases (marked with *), no actual program will be removed):

- R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html
- R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://as.starware.com/dp/search?x=wKX1ILEOi+Vh7AfA98Gm4Me69ZMbubcD/YOx16Q+SeWC2 ZTuKU+cY8neevZ8XnOd85fy72QE4iqoYfifWicoBOpS0HFCeYta5cKXZiVphickHjhdJHEHdQAXUdWxJ vk3
- R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - - (no file)
- *O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\INSTAL~1\UPDATE~1\ISUSPM.exe" -startup
- *O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
- *O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
- *O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe
- *O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe
- *O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ctfmon.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe

4. Click on Fix checked button.

5. Post new HijackThis log.

One last ditch effort.  I found this in some digging I did.  although the info is old..........does it mean anything you?

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's fixed! After doing a lot of digging and research, I discovered that Sun went to a MSI install system. Which is how MS wants everyone to install applications INTO Windows. The conversion from an installer package to an MSI install occurred around version 8.

I found that I could NOT install ANY MSI file. OK, so I go get the MSI Installer program, from MS, and re-install, right? NOPE? The MSI installer program, from MS, runs and promptly says it's already installed! Oops!

There was no way to remove the old program, and there was no way to install it, like a new install. There are NO command line switches, to override the installation. Seemed like a dead end, to me.

After searching the Sun and MS sites for a long time, and NOT finding anything along these lines I was about ready to give up and do a "wipe and re-install". FINALLY, my brain kicked in and remembered an old trick from long ago.

I just renamed the MSI installer program (MSIEXEC.EXE) to and ".old" file extension and it worked, i.e. I re-ran the MSI installer program, this time it worked just fine. I then installed the latest JRE and everything is fine now.

Now, what corrupted my install for the MSIEXEC.EXE program? Your guess is as good as mine. But, after reading more than 2,000+ message entries on, both the SUN and MS sites, with not one reference to this problem or anything similar! I've come to the conclusion that MS isn't as knowledgeable as they'd like us to think. About their own programs.

If such a simple solution, referencing what I did to correct the issue, was known to MS, you'd have thought that they would have published such a solution by now. The "trick" of renaming a file has been around since the start of computing. Which, to be honest, means that I'm getting slower in my old age. :)

I suspect AVG may be causing problems.
Right click on AVG systray icon, click Exit.

Also, go Start>Run, type in:
services.msc
Click OK.

Find following services:
- AVG8 E-mail Scanner
- AVG8 WatchDog
In each case, right click, click Stop.

Try to uninstall Java, now.

Go Start>Run, type in:

One more try...

Go Start>Run, type in:

Click OK.

Uncheck AVG entry(-ies), so it won't start after reboot.
Restart computer.
Try Java again.

Go, or no go, go back to msconfig, enable AVG, and restart.

Let's try brute force...
Uninstall current Java.
Use Windows Installer CleanUp Utility: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 to clean up any leftovers.
Quote
Select the programs (Java, in our case) that you want in the Installed Products list in the Windows Installer CleanUp dialog box. After you make this selection, the utility removes only the Windows Installer configuration information that is related to those programs.
Reboot.
Try installation again.

Better late than never...but I also feel a clean install would definitely fix the issue.

While it is a little time consuming...it would definitely fix the problem.  If you can back up everything you want to save...and either get the recovery software...or an operating system CD...do a fresh install.

To be perfectly honest...this is the first time I've ever run across a situation where the latest version of Java couldn't be installed...unless the download was corrupt...the operating system was corrupt...permission settings...or malware related.

Don't worry, though...I'll be attending the services. as well.

Good luck!
