I am new and need some advice. When I start up my computer. 266 mhz pent. I get a dos message which reads:
Cannot find device file that maybe needed to run windows or a windows application.
The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists.
If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or setup program.
If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file.
c:\WINDOWS\system\VMM32\enable.VXD
press a key to continue.
I press a key and everything seems to be working fine. Am i being vague, or can anyone help?

I remember seeing that on WinME. I never did figure out what was going on... I wouldn't worry about it as older Operating Systems have bigger issues to worry about. Seriously, it was never more than an annoyance. Maybe a Win98 expert knows how to get rid of it, but if not I wouldn't panic. :-X

You have removed some program or device that had files called for in the registry.Whatever was removed,probably incorrectly or a corrupted file for something not being used, it is not required for the system to function correctly (apparently). In the absence of knowledge of what it is specifically, a reformat would be the best and quickest way to remove the error message, but if things are working correctly and you don't want to reinstall Windows,it is just a nuisance.

Thanks for the quick responce. I guess I'll just put up with it. I use firefox as a web browser and would like to remove internet explorer from my computer the message is probable Gates way af getting back ;D

Sadly, you need to keep IE for updates. :'(

I don't thin IE is at the root of this problem. Leaving it in your system is not going to cause any problems, but there are ways to remove it (www.litepc.com) but updates are obtained through IE, if those are needed.

I thought this went away with W95, apparently not. Try this.
The Windows Accessibility driver (Enable.vxd) is damaged or missing.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
1. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
2. Click the Windows Setup tab.
3. Click the Accessibility Options check box to clear it.
4. Click OK and restart the computer when requested.
MORE INFORMATION
If you want to enable the accessibility features, repeat the above steps. In step 3, click the Accessibility Options check box to select it.

The problem that you have has occurred because you have improperly removed a program.
chances are, you or someone else tried to remove a program by right-clicking on the folder where it was located, or it was deleted in DOS.
(That was mainly what GX1_Man said)
I know this because I got a computer from my neighbors, and they had improperly removed some old virus scanner, and I get the same thing with a different directory and file name.
If I am wrong, please tell me. I am rather curious about this error as well.

I suppose your right.
Would editing regedit and deleting the registry file that the directory belonged to help?

Or make things a LOT worse, depending on what was done. ;)

Does the registry have a backup or a restore disk?

Go to File > Export... and save it to disk, either a floppy or a CD-ROM. If you mess up the whole thing, you can go into MS-DOS mode and activate the .reg thing like an EXE file. The registry will automatically be synchronized, thus fixing the problem. That's IF you mess up the system with regedit.

Thank you it worked. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best one. Thanks everyone for all your help
