I replaced a celeron 2.6 ghz in a Gateway ESSEX2 desktop computer with a P4 2.6 ghz 512/800 CPU and it runs at half speed. Also tried it in Compaq Presario with 2.66 GHZ Celeron and same thing happened. Is there a solution for this problem?

I think it may have something to do with the BUS speed of the MB and the chip you are trying to fit.
You might want to check the specs of both for compatability.

I don't have any documentation for the MB's and so far unable to get any info for them but I think 400 is the max and thanks for responding.

The CPU in question is P4 512/800-MHZ. Would this be my problem?

I took the P4 out and put the Celeron back in. Do you want the read out from the problem cpu (P4)? If so, I will reinstall it and get the read out.

1. Capture image - with app or window "active"; ALT-PrntScrn copies it to Clipboard, paste into Paint or any graphics app, save as jpg. BTW, "Shift-PrntScrn" captures entire desktop (don't do this).
2. Below CH Message Box click on Additional Options: Attach image you just created.

Could this have anything to do with the bios and hyperthreading? (just a thought)

800MHz is sure to have HyperThreading... ???

It's probably because the bus speed is 400 and the P4 is 800, so effectively it's being under-clocked by 1/2. Motherboard probably does not have capability of adjusting bus speed.

It has Hyper threading (YES :D)
Well maybe the Processor in question has has ESD? (Electrostatic discharge/damage)
the clock speed should e alot higher?

RK80532PG064512; BX80532PG2600D, 800MHz, 13 This is probably your P4; part number is on the top of the cpu
Your Bus Speed is 100, Celeron's multiplier is 26, P4 multiplier is 13.
It's a lot more involved than you were thinking (LOL). There's nothing you can do unless the motherboard has the ability to be reconfigured, which most all branded computers cannot. Retail motherboards are much more configurable.

I have downloaded the upgrade, will work on the problem tomorrow as it is getting late here. I will be replying on progress again tomorrow.

Dang?... Well have you tried completely removing the CPU and checking that the TGA (Top Grid Array) Hasn't been swapped over... (indents on the CPU chip would indicate) Otherwise... I am stumped... I will do more research and see if i can help you...

Your cpu is a Socket 478 model, so you can just ignore that.

The specifications of this:

indicate that this CPU will work.
RK80532PC064512; BX80532PC2600D, 400MHz, 26; This P4 would give you 2.6GHz
However, don't expect a significant increase in performance over the Celeron you are currently using. Better to sell the Gateway than try to upgrade it.

The P4 is an extra CPU with more cache and higher bus speed than the celeron that I had laying idle and decided to install it in the Gateway PC that I dug out of the throw away bin where I live and don't intend to invest in upgrade for it. PC runs good with the celeron also runs ok with P4 at half speed. I would still like to solve the problem with the P4.

OK. A science experiment! I don't believe it's a solvable problem. The motherboard that is supplied to Gateway has a very limited number of hardware variations. If you can determine make & model of motherboard, you may be able to find someone who has "hacked the BIOS" successfully. There is a chance that the mobo is supplied to several manufacturers that each have their own BIOS. I have a computer in a similar situation but am not willing to flash the BIOS as an experiment.

We know. He wants to modify it, which is unlikely on a Gateway.

From personal experience I can tell you that even if you achieve this (yes, it is possible on certain MB-CPU combinations), you will more than likely encouter intermittant issues with such things as USB, AGP, PCI Bus errors etc causing fatal errors and BSOD's.
If its purely a 'science project' then have at it but be warned, you could invest a lot of time getting the CPU running at the right speed, only to find its unusable.

Thanks to Computer_Commando I was able to get the CPU's that are supported by MB from the manual which doesn't list 512/800. Below is the list:

Nothing is lost if things don't go right as I mention earlier I got the PC out of the throw away bin and it was trashed when I started puting it together. Nothing worked on it.

Not very much. And it would be completely swamped by the 50% speed reduction.
