Title: Computer freezes up periodically
Post by: Moda on August 23, 2008, 04:50:12 PM
Hi, I just built two new identical computers. One of them is freezing up for a few seconds every minute or so and I cant figure out why.

Both are top of the line, core2extremes, 4870 cards, 8gigs ram, p5e asus boards etc.

At first I assumed it was a memory or heating issue, but I have tested all of the memory, vid cards and every other piece of hardware in the box that isnt freezing up. I also checked the temps and all are much cooler than they even need to be. I reinstalled os and still no luck.

I hate to assume that the problem is in either the board or chip but it seems thats all thats left. Please help!

I guess I should have been more specific. Here is a more detailed listing of the parts and such:

HIS Radeon HD 4870 512MB 256-bit GDDR5
ASUS P5E X38 ATX Intel Motherboard
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800
Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 Yorkfield 3.0GHz
Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive

Vista 64 Ultimate

hmm other stuff:
updated drivers for everything, i think gpu driver version is 8.501
everything is brand new

GPU temp = 45 C
CPU temp = 20 C
MB   temp = 38 C

Problem:

On one of the boxes the entire system freezes up for a few seconds (between 2-5sec) every minute or so, sometimes more frequently. It happens everywhere in windows. Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the first freeze up to happen although it varies but once it starts it doesnt stop. It only happens on the one box and I have tried switching every piece of hardware that isnt the chip, board or drive and still the problem persists.

So.....since you have two identical computers.....what's different about them?
(software, hardware, downloads, ect...)

When did the problem start?

Also, you may want to test to see if this happens in Safe Mode.

There is absolutely nothing different between the two hardware or software. They have exactly the same parts as well as software. Nothing has been downloaded other than drivers for all of the hardware and updates for vista and norton.

The problem has been there since I initially built the computers.

I have not tried this yet, will do that shortly.

Try swapping the PSU's....
Next i would do the same with the CPU's.

Those would be my first 2 suspects...
