Hey guys, my right click menu has gone old-style in Vista.
I didn't change any settings and in the settings it's set to the Vista theme.
What can I do to set it back?
-
Explain old style and we'll go from there....

From this:

to the classic style (Windows 95, 98, 98SE, 2000, ME).

Mine looks like the 2nd one. I see nothing wrong with it.
-
It never used to be like it and I prefer the new version.
-
The second one has been on my computer since the very beginning, so I'm not sure where did you get the first screenshot from.
-
For some reason it'll display the first one when I right click folders and such, but not files and shortcuts.
-
Hmmm....strange, because usually folder right click menu displays more options, than file right click menu.
If it just happened, try system restore.
-
The first one was the menu from My Computer on the desktop and the second one was the menu from Q-Dir.exe shortcut on the desktop.
Actually, it might be Q-Dir that has done it. I'll see what happens when I uninstall.
-
running any Themes ? ?
-
No themes running, just the Vista theme with another background.
Uninstalling Q-Dir did nothing. Could it be a registry key?
-
I have Q-Dir installed too, and it doesn't affect me.
As i said, try system restore. It may be quick fix.
-
Could the rescue tools at startup help me? A restore is the last thing I want to do.
-
You're mistaking system restore with Windows reinstall.
Start>All programs>Accessories>System tools>System restore.
It deals ONLY with your computer registry.
Reset it to couple of days ago (depending on when the problem started), and your problem may be solved.
It won't touch your data.
-
Ah yes, sorry Broni, it's late here for me, and I'm forgetting things. I'll check that out.
-
Not a problem :)
-
Hi mate, just restored, and it hasn't changed. I don't want to go back any further.
-
Does the same thing happen in My Computer, and Windows Explorer?
-
Windows Explorer: Fine
Inside any programs: Fine
On the desktop: Fine except program shortcuts. My Computer, Recycle Bin, My Documents are fine.
Taskbar: Fine
-
So, ONLY desktop shortcuts display that short (#1) menu?
-
No, the desktop shortcuts display the #2 menu.
When I right-clicked My Computer on the desktop, #1 appeared.
-
Well, it's all normal then...hehehehe
My Computer right click menu looks the same (#1).
You have too much time on hands....LOL
-
Unless it's something they changed in SP2 and I didn't notice.
Thanks anyway Broni.
Yeah I do seem to have too much time LOL!
Night.
-
Trust me. Nothing has changed. It's only your imagination.
It happens to everyone.
Sometimes, I'd swear, that thing was brown, but in reality, it has always been black ;D

Context menus change depending on what you right click on. That's why they are called context menus, they give you options that are in context with what you click on.
If you right click on the taskbar it will give yet another completely different context menu.
-
why would the menu with more options be the "old style" menu?
-
It isn't, I think the OP just didn't know how to say what he/she was asking.

This is true.
But that is not the answer to my question.
If you look at the two images I posted which were taken from screenshots off my desktop, you will see that they look different. In #1, there is a line down the left side of all the options. In #2, there isn't.
In #1, when you hover over an option, the blue highlight fades in and out. In #2, it just appears suddenly.
I prefer #1 style, which is what I am trying to ask, how can I change #2 back to #1 because it sure was not like that a few weeks ago.
Also I just tried changing the theme back to Windows Vista rather than Modified Theme, and when it had completed, I right clicked a shortcut on my desktop and it looked like #1. I right clicked again and it had changed back to #2. There must be something wrong.
-
#1 is for my computer. #2 is everything else.
#1 has a "line" because there are no Menu Icons.
#2 doesn't. It has the icons.
a "workaround" might be to uninstall ALL programs that add a shell extension, or disable the shell extensions themselves (for example, 7-zip, powerarchiver, And I mean, *All*.
one of them might be only compatible with IContextMenu2 and the effects you see are only with IContextMenu3... (effects, I might add, that I haven't seen ever- the "fade in" for menu items simply isn't implemented to begin with, AFAIK)
