You can't. Windows OS have to be installed from old to new otherwise the newer OS will cease to function..

Either check in Device Manager for info or right clik the drive in My Computer select Properties and see what it's listed as.

Does the HDD itself have any ID label on the outside of tit ? ?

It was my old computer's hard drive, my friend who is a pro at machines just took the HD out and put it in a special case so it doesn't have any lable or anything.

Hi lordoftheplat,

You can do it easily. One of my PCs can boot formm Win98, Win2K, WinXP and three Linux distros all on one HD!! (sssh, Mac OS next!) ;D ;D Of course there's no reason to have 6 OSs but just because they are there and it's fun to show off it to my geek friends. :D

If you need to use only 98 and XP, you need to create two partitions on the harddrive, install win98 on the first partition. Then install WinXP on the second. When you reboot, the screen will  give you a choice to use Win98 or XP, you pick what you want.

There's also a free program called GAG you can DL, you don't really need it but it will give you a nice GUI to pick your perfered OS.

Oh, forgot to mention, you can also use VM (Virtual Machine). You can download Microsoft's VirtualPC 2007 from Microsoft, or download VMWare. Both are free. If you just want to stay with Windows OSs, Virtual PC is easier to install and use, but if you want to use other OSs, VMWare is a better way to go. The advantage of using virtual machine is that you don't need to reboot your computer, you can switch in and out of any OSs you like because they run concurrently. The down side is it will eat up lot more resources  and you need to have a CPU at least 1.5G or higher to run them decently.

I apologize if this is the wrong post for this question.  But as I am trying to dual boot it seemed like the right place.. Maybe.  I did make 2 partitions and did start to install win98 se on the first partition and it was going great but then I got that stupid error message about not having enough memory to initialize windows, it hadn't even finished installing it was the first time that the setup has the system reboot.  Maybe I am just stupid but I think it maybe has something to do with the fact that I have 2 partitions?  Please oh great and wise people of the forums help me, and if I am posting on the wrong post and there is another one that is where I should be posting please point me to it.

much thanks in advance from a frustrated user just trying to relive some glory days of older windows 98 games that I can't get to run on xp
