Sort of a VM. A way to run programs without installing them. Good for testing and such. You can also run your browser sandboxed for visiting a known infected web site, IE Defender Pro and the like. The browser is "Sandboxed" so whatever is happening can be easily terminated and no changes made to your PC.

When you run a program on your computer, data flows from the hard disk to the program via read operations. The data is then processed and displayed, and finally flows back from the progam to the hard disk via write operations.

Sandboxie changes the rules such that write operations do not make it back to your hard disk.

    * Intercept changes to both your files and registry settings, making it virtually impossible for any software to reach outside the sandbox.
    * Traps cached browser items into the sandbox as a by-product of normal operation, so when you throw away the sandbox, all the history records and other side-effects of your browsing disappear as well.

Oh, sweet, I'll have to set that up on a bench test system I'm setting up soon, should save me some hassle if I have to intentionally tamper with viruses. I think we all know how annoying it is to install windows XP on a 667MHz socket 370 coppermine w/ a 66MHz FSB, 128KB of cache, 256MB of SDRAM, and a 10GB ATA66 hard drive, using some 32X ATA33 CD-ROM.

I heavily use this software for experimenting with different software. Very nice piece of software.
