Computer help needed! I'm not very computer saavy and have been attempting to fix my computer for over a week now. I started up my computer last week only to find I have no sound. In the bottom right corner over my volume control there is a red x that reads "no audio output device is installed". I have googled this error message and tried what others have suggested, but nothing has worked. Is anyone able to walk me through this step by step? I would GREATLY appreciate it!!!

Please post your computer model and current operating system. What steps have you tried in solving the audio problem and is it a newly installed windows? Any changes before this happen?

My computer is a HP Pavilion dv6000 with Windows Vista. I have not done anything to my computer, all software on it is what the computer came with. I have looked up the error message on google and followed suggestions that people gave others for the same problem.
I have noticed almost everyone tells them to go to the device manager and check the "sound, video and game controllers tab" to check the status. I don't have that option under device manager. The only sound option I have found is under the control panel "Hardware and Sound" and that tab only lets me adjust the volume and change the default sounds. So after that I'm stuck as far as what to do. So frusturating.

Just a thought ..... perhaps no sound drivers are installed or if it has, it's broke somehow?
HP dv6000 notebook is what you have? Then try installing (or reinstalling) the Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-50979-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=2093&product=1842155&sw_lang=) to see if it helps any if you haven't already attempted to do so.

I tried downloading the Conexant Audio Driver, before it was able to finish downloading I got the error message "Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver". Any ideas???

sound, video and game controllers
Do you mean you don't see this option under device manager? It could probably be that its broken as previously mentioned.

Here is a overview of the device manager....

It may help you understand what everyone is asking you to check.

Yes in the Device Manager I have no option that says "sound video and game controllers". So is my computer pretty much busted? I've only had it 2 years. :(

An addon sound card would be the least expensive solution...

How much do those run? And that would for sure fix my problem?
