Title: Keyboard, Mouse Not Working
Post by: fullbug on November 15, 2007, 08:17:32 PM
My desktop computer is an XP Pro, SP2, getting on the old side but still working well...
Was I should say, all of a sudden my mouse stopped working, so I rebooted and the mouse worked but then my keyboard stopped working, tried rebooting again and now both dont work....
I cant even get into safe mode without the keyboard, so I'm stuck, has something like this ever happened to anyone else?
An indication of a complete crash coming maybe?
I'm at a loss of what to do, what can you do with no mouse or keyboard?
I have a new Windows Disc, but when I tried to install it awhile back it said there wasnt enough memory to do it.....

While computer on, disconnect mouse, and keyboard. Turn off your computer. Reconnect mouse, and keyboard, restart computer. Windows will try to find both.
See, if it helps.
Trying another mouse, and keyboard would help, as well.
Are they USB, or PS/2 devices?

Trying now....
The mouse is an USB, with a plug on the end so it fits, keyboard plug is round, so I guess you mean PS/2...
I tried unplugging and plugging in both and rebooting and that didnt help, so I rebooted without them both and the computer said both were missing, so after it finishes I'm going to plug in both, reboot and see what happens....

If mouse is USB, try another USB port.

Ok, when I booted this time, it said it found the mouse OK, but it still isnt working, tried it in the USB port and it said it found new hardware, but still wouldnt work, the new hardware wizard came up but of course I couldnt use it with the mouse not working....
But it didnt find the keyboard, it beeped twice and said '0103-AE Keyboard Error'
This is an HP Vectra computer by the way....

I don't understand. Where was it plugged in before?

Most likely, your keyboard is dead. I just found out, that on HP Vectra computers, when keyboard is unplugged (or dead), it'll display: 0103-AE Keyboard Error
You need to try another keyboard, to start with.

The keyboard and mouse ports are round, seperate from the 2 USB ports I have, the keyboard fits right in, while the mouse has an adapter put on to fit....
What are the odds of the keyboard and mouse dying at the same time?
In any case, will try to find another keyboard to test out in the morning, thanx for your help....

Pretty slim, but possible. In my opinion your keyboard is dead, your mouse probably not.

to fit into rounded port? If so, remove adapter, and plug it in into USB port, while computer off.
Restart.

if you have another mouse and another keyboard, try that. if mouse and keyboard fails, then it must be something with your computer itself.

or you could try your own mouse and keyboard (that you are saying not working) on another computer to see if they are broken or not.

I hope you're not swapping these around while the computer is on...

Tried that, its just then says it cant find a mouse connected to the port....
Its weird, when I plug another mouse in the right port it says it cant find one connected, but when I plug in the mouse I have been using it says its found, but the mouse doesnt work as before....
Later today I will try another keyboard....

Can you boot into Safe Mode?  If so go to Device manager & see if there are any issues with the keyboard/mouse.  Remove them both and reboot.  What happens?

You said, you have two USB ports in the back. Tried both of them?

Well, I guess thats it then.....
I tried a functioning keyboard and that doesnt work either, I guess the ports are screwed or something else?
Not sure what else I can do.....
