Title: connecting to router

Im running XP on my desktop and Vista on laptop.I have a Netgear router wired to the desktop.When I connect router to laptop (wireless) I get half the speed I get on the desktop.Cannot figger out why.Turned off security settings no change.Any ideas?

Is your concern about internet speed or local network speed?
What you describe may be normal for the equipment you use.
How are you reading the speed?
How fast is your internet service?
Typically the DSL seldom hits 1.5 mbs and Cable might do 3  mbs.
The laptop and desktop should be doing above 10mbs, so that is plenty fast enough to keep up with the the internet.
