i heard its really bad to use. can someone tell me why?
-
Don't know what you mean by "really bad to use". Limewire is just another file-sharing program which should not be used to pirate copyright materials.
-
piracy are BAD,don't you agree?
oh, and you can get infected by spy ware and viruses, make the internet slow, lots of bad.
-
you wont get infected by spyware or viruses...
it really depends on how you use limewire.
i prefer torrenting over limewire but now limewire can torrent...
-
i also prefer torrents.

so how can you use it without getting spyware or viruses?
-
and whats a good, free torrent website?
-

You scan every single file, you download, before you touch it.
-

This is a bit misleading. Someone who isn't familiar with Limewire can very easily get infected. I helped out with a little experiment not too long ago and downloaded various files that sounded legit. Upon being run, they infected the computer so badly it had to be reformatted.
-
but seriously...
nearly everyone knows not to download .exe files or other executables
torrent site i prefer
isohunt.com - for legit and legal stuff.
not suggesting i do illegal stuff
-
Upon being run
This is THE main point. Never run anything before you scan a file.
I downloaded several infected files, but in every single instance, upon running them through AVG, threat was detected.

what about the other stuff?

what about the other stuff?
Just think, and don't ask aloud :P
-
Firefox toolbar works pretty nice:

This is common sense. However, that is something many people are lacking...especially in terms of computers. For this little experiment, the files were intentionally executed without protection, but many people just flat-out don't know any better.

That "other stuff" is something we don't cover here, so you're on your own.

This topic is very near the barrier of rules :o
Basically don't download anything but music files from limewire and you should be ok.
-
but the threat is still there woth torrents, right?
-
Threats are everywhere. Just think, and stay safe.

I very much agree with Carbon Dudeoxide
-
i set my filters on limewire to filter out all of certain file types and those crap thing that you get no matter what you search for.
-
Filters no matter how effective will not detect malware period.
-
don't download anything but music files
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3078509/
A newly-discovered flaw in Windows XP puts digital music users at risk, Microsoft Corp. announced Wednesday. A bug in Microsoft’s flagship operating system software allows computer attackers to craft MP3 or WMA music files that give them control of listeners’ computers. Simply browsing to a Web page or folder where such an MP3 file is stored would be enough to invoke the malicious code, and allow an attacker to create, modify, or delete data on the victim’s computer.
-
yeah thats really scary... im not saying that they are illegal but in the past couple weeks I've downloaded over 400 documents from limewire! im kinda scared but I've got to het my media somehow and if just being on a certain website can kill my pc, then I might as well download stuff also. what happens happens. just hope to avoid bad stuffz like this
-
I'll say it only one more time.
Internet IS a very dangerous place to play with, and there is no question about it. But...
Most people need Internet for one reason, or another.
If you play it safe, you can do out there whatever you want. Just stay safe.
At this very moment, I'll knock on wood, but I got connected for the first time 14 years ago, and I never had any kind (viruses, malwares, etc.) of infection.
You can't sit at your computer, and fear for your life. Just stay safe, and you'll be OK.

The largest growing segment of threat based malware is in the IM format...yet people keep using that with little or no protection also.
Aftr al...txtng is kewl !

Same risk? more, less?

Was that meant for me?
I had a quick look through those pages. Interesting, but none of them addressed my question.

I would think that ICQ would be as vulnerable as the rest...maybe more so as you are able to send .exe's or at least you could back when i still used it.

If you are referring to the ICQ client, i.e. installed software package, I agree.
But I wasn't talking about that.
-
oh so the person sending virus just sends it to, its not like they can do some crazy backdoor stuff or anything like that?
-
For torrents torrent.to <i think just google torrent and its torrent.something> and it searches alot of torrent sites for it, as to the music, if you jst dl music youll be fine, except that brilliant "My fellow americans, i would once again like to say that i did not have *censored* relations with that woman" recording
-
My computer is very slow wince i added limewire, im not too happy, and not smart enough how to clean a virus if i got one.
piracy are BAD,don't you agree?

I have downloaded quite a few songs on Limewire.
Unfortunately, most of them (MP3), on opening in Windows Media Player, open up your browser also, and redirect you to freemp3player.com, or something like that. Straight away, the page loads, and asks you to download a file, called Free MP3 Player. This is one of the most common viruses on P2P software.
Here is more information on viruses and Limewire: http://www.answerbag.com/q_view/127357
-
I have Limewire installed on this computer but ever since I installed it when I got my laptop (about 1 and a half years ago), I haven't used it once.
Interesting reads though...

opening in Windows Media Player
