Title: I need some anti virus recs...
Post by: aces67 on February 05, 2009, 04:05:53 PM
I bought a new laptop at Best Buy. They insisted I buy antivirus from them but I didn't. It came with 2 months of Norton 360 and I wanted to see what you guys recommend before I buy more software.

I know I had Norton on my old desktop pc and it worked good but it seemed to attach itself to everything and really bog my pc down.

They were also trying to sell me some Anti spyware software.

So tell me what do I really need? I want this laptop to last quite a while with no problems.

Thanks!

Many people like AVAST and it has received good reviews.
Another choice is AVG.
Both these firms offer free versions.
Of course, they would like you to buy it!

http://www.avast.com/ (http://www.avast.com/)

http://free.avg.com/ (http://free.avg.com/)

Do NOT use both at the same time!

So I'm assuming the version that you can buy is better than the free one right?

Thanks Again!

Get rid of Norton as soon, as possible, using this tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Your options:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

P. S. Personally, I don't recommend AVG.

I believe they use the same internal code.
The one you buy has more polish and better
attention to details.

I think.

I suggest you use Kaspersky 2009 Internet Security.

It served me well enough to avoid network and pc breaches.

But Comodo Internet Security (Firewall + Anti-Virus) also served me well.

Both softwares are good and reliable AV.
But if you prefer deep rootkit scans. Go Kaspersky.
If you wan't to go free AV. Go Comodo.
