Ok this is really wierd problem & i cant figure out a way to solve it. Left the computer (Ubuntu 9.10) ON overnight for a few days (f@h & downloading @ 4 kbps). When i woke up in the morning to check progress, i found that the height of the display area was fluctuating between 8 cm & 10 cm. soon it shrunk to 1 cm. (image attached) What do i do now? As you see its impossible to read anything from the display.

get a new monitor. the magnetic yoke that directs the flow of electrons to the phosphors or the circuitry controlling it (more likely the former) has failed.
-
oh no don't say that... :o been saving to buy a quad and compatible mobo for ages.. no way to get it replaced or something???
-
you can get it replaced.
But it will cost you about four times that of a new, LCD monitor.
Trust me... been down this road. I had a monitor that did the same thing; except it went right into a straight line in the middle.
I was able to fix it, temporarily, though, by giving it a good solid whack. results may vary, and this is certainly not a long-term solution.
I might add that in my case the monitor literally exploded; sparks and smoke and whatnot. Quite exciting.
-
heh thanks maybe the quad has to wait :-/

If money is real tight, you might even look around for used CRTs. I've seen some cheap ones at pawn shops that even have a 30 warranty (exchange only).
With so many people buying flat screens, there is a surplus of CRTs.
-
You can get 17"-19" LCD monitor from Craigslist for ~$5O

Right. I used to repair CRT TVs and for a while, monitors. When a monitor acts like this, don't leave it running like that for too long. This stage is often the prelude to fiery destruction. Even if it doesn't burn your house down, it can make a really bad smell and lots of smoke.
-
Just to be "politically correct" we must edit "exploded" to "imploded" ;D

Why? (I don't understand)
-
CRT monitors don't explode. They implode, since there is a vacuum inside.
-
only if the tube is breached during the "explosion". For me it wasn't really an explosion... just a whole lot of sparks and smoke.
-
did hitting it work?
-
Since he's not replying, I suppose, an implosion sucked him in ;D
