Yesterday my Dell Laptop with Vista Home restarted itself after some MS updates and now I can't get audio to work with Skype, for example. The little speaker icon that was just beneath the battery icon is gone and I can't find how to restore it. I looked on Control Panel Sound but don't see anything amiss. Onboard music audio works. ???
Help, please. I am not a guru.

Try to reinstall the audio drivers for your dell laptop or do a system restore to the point before installing updates.

This was going to be suggestion as well. Also look through the updates to sse if any audio updates were performed, if so, remove them.
