Title: Outlook and Plain Text Formatting
Post by: RivieraKid on September 19, 2008, 08:12:39 AM
Hello

I have a strange problem with Outlook (2003) and Plain Text messages which I hope you can help me with.

I have a PHP file which automatically forwards a txt file to a given email address, however the formatting is lost when it arrives in my copy of outlook. I've tried various difference copies PCs with the following results:-

PC 1 - Outlook 2003 (11.8217.8221) SP3 + Vista  = Does not work
PC 2 - Outlook 2003 (11.8217.8221) SP3 + Vista    = Works
PC 3 - Outlook 2003 (11.8217.8221) SP3 + Vista    = Works
PC 4 - Outlook 2000 + XP = Does not work

If the email is sent to me via an email forwarding filter (e.g googlemail) it then arrives fine at my end.

Example - File as it leaves the server

Text Line 1     2    3.00
Text Line 2     1    3.45
Text Line 3     4    1.25   etc

Direct to my outlook I get :-

Text Line 1     2    3.00   Text Line 2     1    3.45 Text Line
3     4    1.25

Everybody else and via googlemail to me: -
Text Line 1     2    3.00
Text Line 2     1    3.45
Text Line 3     4    1.25

Any ideas what flag / setting I have wrong somewhere?

What is the mail format set to on the machines?

Tools > Options > Mail Format

Some could be set to Plain and the others to Rich or HTML

All PCs are set to HTML (I have tried setting it to plain text)

Forgot to add, on my PC (PC1) if I click reply the formatting reverts back to the correct formatting. Word is set up as the default email editor on all PCs

Sorry, I messed up. Check

Tools > options > preferences > Email Options  and see if "read all standard mail in plain text"

The first one is for outgoing mail only, my bad

Thanks for the suggestion, I tried it but without success.  (Even after restarting Outlook)

Any other thoughts? I've only a few strands of hair left which I am hoping to keep :o)

Im out of ideas. I run into strange quirks like that with Outlook all the time, which is why always try to talk people into ThunderBird. I usually just shrug my shoulders and move on.
