Post by: Joker08 on August 01, 2008, 11:01:42 PM
Hey guys just a quick question, just recently my windows media player has began only playing the audio of videos, the screen stays black and i hear the audio but the movie clip never appears.  any ideas? i have tried to uninstall and reinstall to no change, i have tried to roll back to an older wmp by uninstalling but it only wants me to install wmp 11.
 thanks

Is the movie appears in some other players like xing or VLC IF yes then you have to please see is the format of the movie is correct or not or try to run on real player. It might help? Tell me what happened?

I think you just need to install the appropriate codecs.

carbon any idea which ones? the movies i have on my desktop are short clips i got in an email from my father they are WMV and played fine a week ago, and then boom one day the video just stopped playing while the sound continues to work. so i don't believe they are wrong format, since i did not change the format between when they did work and when they stopped working.

They were working before? Hmmm....

You could try using a System Restore (http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000589.htm) and restoring the computer to a few days before it happened (no files will be deleted) or you can try reinstalling Windows Media Player.

Slight aside but - go get Win Media Player Classic - Google that and you should find it'll be around with a big bunch of codecs . "Alshow" also is good and VLC player will not let you down on almost anything you throw at it.

Sorry - not helping re your problem but - just me - hate Win media Player!!!  Too many nuisance aspects IMO.

ok so when i downloaded windwos classic player i was able to watch the clips that were saved to my comp but i am still un able to view videos off of the internet such as videos on you tube and stuff i get the audio just fine but no picture.  I have tried to uninstall and reinstall wmp 11 like 10 times and have tried to downloaded codecs but to no avail.  just after this problem occured like 5 or 6 days later i was stupid and downloaded a virus and so for some reason i have no restore point to go back to prior to the video issue.  however the video issue started pre virus.
 thanks

This I am assuming is your problem Brian .....

The YouTube stuff is sent out as Flash - .flv files.  You need a grabber to save those (if you haven't already got one) and then go get FLV Player 2.0 build 24 ... it's a freebie and easily found by Googling.  It is specifically for FLV files only.

ok thanks i will try that when i get home from work. the files that wont run off my comp are mostly mpeg and wmv files any idea on those?

wmv and mpeg should not be any problem at all - that's hard to understand if they give problems ...... only occasionally one of these will have been produced with a different or less usual codec - which might mean going looking.

I have found myself that ''AlShow'' is useful as if it can't/won't play a file, it'll go look for the codec for you.

As I said - do not like the Win media Player - I think anything but that will give you better results and fewer nuisance gizzmos!

There's more to this issue than it seems as CDO determined earlier his Media Player once worked and now it doesn't...

Try CDO's advice above and let us know.

which advice patio? the system restore, codec, and reinstall? i have done all three, i have no system restore point from before the issue for some reason, i have downloaded all the codecs i have found to no avail i have no idea if there are certain ones i should be looking for, and i have uninstalled and reinstalled wmp 11 at least 7 or 8 times. unless i missed something else which maybe i did, then i am not sure what else to try.

Hmmmm....lets go back to the start of the problem.

Have you had any hardware or software changes lately? (downloads, installs, runs, ect...)
Also, is there anything else wrong with Windows?

I had the exact same problem, but with all media players.  Sound and a black screen.  It just all of a sudden happened out of nowhere on a reboot.  Video files that I had played the day before would not play correctly now.  I searched around different forums and found what seemed to be a common fix.  If you have an ATI video card and have ATI Catalyst Control Center installed, this may be your solution.  Open Catalyst > Video>Video Basics>Video Presets.  If it's set to "Custom", that's probably your problem.  Set it to "Home" and click Apply.  When I first tried this, Catalyst would not let it change to "Home".  No matter what I'd click on in the pull-down menu it would remain "Custom".  Only after I did a Windows System Restore was I able to switch it to "Home".  After that everything worked normally again.  Hope this helps you out. :)

thanks for the advice i do have ati and mine is set to custom and just like you said i am unable to change it to home. I tried to do a system restore but it still doesnt let me, is there a certain time frame on the system restore you did or did you just pick a random one before it let you change the setting?

the screen is just black as well when i use it, it is the same as with media player, the problem that other guy listed is similar to mine i went into my ati settings and mine is also set to custom instead of home, i wonder if i re-install the catalyst program if it will allow me to change it

TM hit it on the button i uninstalled my drivers and the catalyst software and videos worked on wmp and vlc so i just gotta figure out if its the driver or the catalyst software.
