I have an old hard drive and I want to reformat it but I don't have a boot disk because I can't get on to windows, it starts to load and then the computer shuts off. without a boot disk can I still erase the hard drive? it is windows 2000 professional and the hard dirve is a 60ghz seagate.

This archive (http://www.arbt35.dsl.pipex.com/bootdisk.zip) contains a self extracting bootdisk image.
Download it, extract it to a folder and run the resultant bootdisk.exe with a diskette in the floppy drive.
That diskette can now be used to boot your machine.

thank you I will have to try it and see if it works. will it work with a cd-rom also?
-
also does anyone know why my computer would just restart itself as windows is loading? just as it is about to come to the sign on page it happens.

The bootdisk loads real mode mouse and CD drivers. It also contains various tools including Delpart which you should use to clear all partitions before attempting setup.
Scandisk, format, fdisk edit and doskey etc are also included.
No RAM drive is used.
-
You don't need a bootdisk, W2K is bootable.
-
I know the install disk is bootable but I don't know where the disk is

Then what are you going to do with a boot disk if you have nothing to reload? :-? :-? :-?

..... and then? :-?

Formatting won't securely erase a hard drive if that's what you're trying to do. With the right tools, data will still be recoverable.
-
how then can I safely erase the hard drive?
